You can always find interesting glasses at my optical shop on ebay:

Help,

Try http://www.globallens.com/.

Help 22 Jun 2009, 10:51

I wear contacts on a regular basis. Where can I order contact lens online WITHOUT prescription? Thank you in advance.

DWV 13 May 2009, 16:09

Opticallabdirect is another one; they have various trifocal styles including executive.

Don't overlook local stores. Last time I checked, Walmart's price was $100 for 7x28 in customer-supplied frames. Which is more than online, but you can be sure they'll be measured properly, and avoid shipping charges. And Sears' sale price on trifocals was cheaper than getting them online (8x35 with transitions).

EyeTri 07 May 2009, 15:25

I've had eyeglassfactoryoutlet.com make quite a few pairs of lined trifocals for me and I've been very satisfied. If you have frame and you just want lenses changed, try ReplaceALens.com. They have done good work for me at a very reasoable price.

Cactus jack 07 May 2009, 14:49

Try www.eyeglassfactoryoutlet.com/. I have not used them, but I have seen a couple of posts by members that seem satisfied.

C.

 07 May 2009, 13:12

Which on-line retailers still make lined trofocals? Does anyone here know? Thanks

JC '04 03 Mar 2009, 03:55

I live in the US so you'll won't see a United States Postal Service (USPS) item tracking number.

Sorry I should have asked witch side of the ocean you are on.

I made an order on 02/02. On 02/24 They sent me a USPS tracking number. From there it only took 3 days to arrive.

My assumption would be they would send a Royal Mail tracking number. But I don't know.

Maybe one of our UK friends would be able to answer this one better

benn 02 Mar 2009, 15:13

just tried the contact lenses.UK.

Great price, even with shipping.

Kevin 02 Mar 2009, 14:32

JC 04

I got a receipt e-mail, but have not yet received a USPS. Does that mean that have yet to be dispatched? I'm living in the UK.

JC '04 01 Mar 2009, 20:51

Kevin

I orderd a pair from them and got email recept of what i orderd. When it arrives at their store I got a USPS (via Zenni) notice giving the status of them.

russell 26 Feb 2009, 06:42

Does anyone know an online retailer who has cheap, fashionable frames with clip on sunglasses? I wear progressives, and zenni (the best source I've found thus far) doesn't carry the narrower progressive lenses, thus their frames are not so fashionable.

Trent 25 Feb 2009, 18:49

I hope you people get your glasses. Check out Glassyeyes (link on eyescene front page)

http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com/

Great source for reviews and testimonials related to on-line eyewear stores.

Kevin 24 Feb 2009, 09:33

Do zenni optical e-mail you when they dispatch your glasses

Random_eye 23 Feb 2009, 14:48

I bought from Opticalchic.com on Jan 10th and still haven't got my glasses. I have been told they were shipped today Feb 23rd. SO we will see.

EyeTri 04 Dec 2008, 07:39

If you have any frames that you would like to have new lenses made for, you might want to consider www.replacealens.com for this work. In the past year I've had them replace lenses in two pairs of glasses and I've been pleased with the results. The prices were quite reasonable ($60.00 for 7 x 28 trifocals in CR-39). Quality is excellent. Turnaround time was about two weeks.

Kendyl 23 Sep 2008, 15:49

Thanks for the info. Lensway doesn't have all of the colored lenses that I wanted to get. My roommate was also looking to get some, like 8 different colors! Guess I will keep searching ; )

sourgrapes 23 Sep 2008, 08:10

And I am in the US

sourgrapes 23 Sep 2008, 08:10

Lensway is wonderful. I've ordered twice from them, the order arrives quickly and they aren't expensive. http://int.lensway.com/index.jsp

Dieter 23 Sep 2008, 05:58

Kendyl, lensway.se in Sweden. You have to "route around" a bit to find English. The US is not listed directly but is considered a "Non EU" country.

Kendyl 22 Sep 2008, 21:38

I am aware now that it is nearly impossible to order contacts online in the US. Anyone know of a good website in which I can order some from either Canada or Europe?

 19 Sep 2008, 08:09

So, I need to order a pair of plus contact lens' online to wear under my minus glasses. Without having a prescription, where is the easiest and best place to order in the U.S. right now? Thanks!

view all threads on this forum and do a search, the question has been asked many times. optical4less and zenni optical and lbw eyewear are ones often recommended

eyebuyer 17 Sep 2008, 15:29

Wondering which mass retailers verify prescriptions and which ones don't. I was thinking of buying from LensCrafters and wanted to check...

sg 06 Aug 2008, 17:12

really? that's unfortunate, i was planning on ordering there again...

Cut-in UK  06 Aug 2008, 15:30

I'm sorry to hear the comments on 'optical4less' as I wanted to order from them again because of the professional quality of the lenses, and good value. Clearly Albert was a pivotal factor in their success, up to his departure.

Can someone give me the latest position and how 'bad' things might be?

Wurm 06 Aug 2008, 12:15

Elkane,

I'm glad to hear you got the preauthorization removed, and the matter was resolved to your satisfaction.

On the other hand, I don't think you've established that glassesonweb.com is a scam site (at least not with the info you posted). From what you wrote, you waited a few days and then got nervous and called the owner. Not all vendors make and ship glasses immediately, and most of the online companies take at least a week or two to ship out.

As I recommend in the FAQ, the best approach with any online retailer is to start with a small order and if that is satisfactory, then consider a major purchase with all the upgrades.

Elkane 06 Aug 2008, 11:38

PS - I learned yesterday that with the "Better Business Bureau" website and Google, you can pretty much find any scam website's info...

Elkane 06 Aug 2008, 11:34

I just went through hell with glassesonweb.com/alldesignerglasses.com and wanted to share some info.

First of all, like it's been said before, the website is running but there's no one actually working there. The automated system just takes your money and that's it.

My credit card was preauthorized for around $400 for a pair of glasses with lots of options on the lens, and the next few days the order status kept saying "pending." Now if I waited maybe 30days the preauthorization probably would've expired anyway, but 400 bucks is too much money for me to wait a month for. So I did a little research and this is what I found out.

The owner's name is Yuri Barsuk. His "office" is located on 84 Pantano Dr in Thornhill, Ontario. Currently he's running the website www.resumecourier.ca and if you call them, he picks up. The number is: (647) 272-2300.

I called and got my order cancelled and the preauthorization removed.

Eva 30 Jul 2008, 09:51

Anyone bought from opticalchic.com ?

I found some great frames there

 20 Jul 2008, 12:23

Where can one have a progressive with an add less than +1 made? (And won't try to contact eye doctor)?

Kinnley 18 Jul 2008, 20:02

Has anyone purchased frames from bestbuyeyeglasses.com? I am looking to purchase a pair of Nicole Miller frames but do not want the company to contact my eye doctor. Any help would be much appreciated!

specs4ever 13 Jul 2008, 09:32

I never had any problems with Kounopt myself. I did attempt to purchase from him before I read the negative reviews, but he didn't bother answering any of my quiries, so when I read the reviews, I figured that this was one guy to stay away from. Glad that you had good luck with him. I have heard that Optical 4 less has had a lot of problems since Albert left, so I would also be very skeptical about using them again, although my past experiences were good.

Johnny 13 Jul 2008, 07:15

Spec4ever-

I've also read something about Kounopt problems in the past, but I have two pairs from him (he's in Cyprus). I have the 7/7 prism pair, and a -23 pair from glass. The -23's were just over $200 delivered when Optical4Less wanted almost $300.

I didn't want lenticular/myodisc lenses which is another reason I ordered from Kounopt. Arrival took approx 3 wks but worth it.

I think O4Less are ripoff artists, and I'm still VERY bitter at them for not refunding a full purchase price when they couldn't deliver due to not having specific lenses in stock. They gave me some lame reason about Paypal not allowing them to do it. Morons.

specs4ever 12 Jul 2008, 21:21

Konnopt is a ripoff from everything I heard as recently as 2 years ago. I haven't even heard of him for about that long, but one of the online optical sites had a big do not use after his name for quite a while.

Johnny 11 Jul 2008, 22:34

TO PRISM RX:

I got high prism glasses (7 each lens) from Kounopt.com several years ago. I don't recall exact price, but was the cheapest quote at the time.

Mark 11 Jul 2008, 16:12

Hi Everyone

I have some contacts that I had used in the past for, but decided that I don't want to wear contacts anymore. All packages are open, but the actual *blisters* are still factory sealed and untampered. I have the following powers...

If anyone is interested in either the Contacts, Glasses, or Project-O-Chart, let me know at r-o-d-i-n-9-7-0 (zero) at y-a-h-o-o-.-c-o-m without any dashes.. Make an offer. I'll give this a few days before I go a different route.

brillenträger 10 Jul 2008, 10:24

optical4less is quite cheap, but currently they only manufacture prisms up to 6 pdpt / glass...don't know why though, they used to go up to 11 pdpt/glass, per prism you pay 3$ extra...but still a very good bargain.

Prism Rx 06 Jul 2008, 08:28

Which online retailer has the best prices on prescriptions requiring prism? Thank you.

sourgrapes 16 Jun 2008, 17:56

sounds like a capthca .are you using any special styles or such in your browser? try loading it with a normal browser with the default settings and see. this is typical i dunno. *drunk*

RL 16 Jun 2008, 16:07

I was recently trying to contact Optical 4 Less about their "Special orders" and when I tried to submit my question, it required "Key from left image." I could find no such thing. There was a box that had "f by p" in it, but that was not the code. Does anybody know what they require?

frankieD 28 May 2008, 14:54

Just received a shipment of 4 pairs of glasses for my daughter from Zenni. All 4 pairs were nicely done, and I am sure they used hi index in even the 2 pairs that were paid for as regular index. Time from placing order to receiving it was a little over 3 weeks, but the prescription strength was fairly high, with strong cyl. We are very satisfied with Zenni.

Robert 10 May 2008, 17:12

James

I assume from the £ you are in the UK. If you are unhappy with the way the opticains made up your glasses you should insist that they put them right. Did you buy them from a major chain or small practice?

James 09 May 2008, 09:36

Yeah, I tried optical 4 less but they dont make bifocals in my prescription.

Johnny5555us 06 May 2008, 23:02

Regarding ZENNI - I ordered one pair from them several years ago, I think it took about 2-3 weeks to receive (in Los Angeles), but worth it. The only thing that I don't like about Zenni is that they are very limited to the power of the lenses they offer, unlike Optical4Less.

But I've had problems ordering from Optical4Less in the past - they refused to refund the full amount even though they were unable to fill the order after a month. Their reason was that PayPal didn't give them an option to refund the full amount after 30 days. They gave me a $10 coupon toward the next order... as if I was really going to order through them again - HA!

In any case - ZENNI's got my vote over O4Less any day. Good luck!!

 06 May 2008, 18:49

£400 ... wow. You could get them much cheaper online... like on optical4less.

James 06 May 2008, 16:21

Hello

I have a new pair of glasses - my prescription is +14.40 +1.50 and +15.75 +1.75 with +3.50 add.

My new glasses 3 months old are useless cos they bifocal areas are about 6mm too wide, so I can't converge to read. Im starting a battle with the opticians tio make me a new pair but they dont want to admit they made the wrong measurement.

So Im trying to find a retailer who would be prepared to shave 3mm off the inside of each lens so that the bifocal areas are usful.

So if anyone has any ideas I want to hear from you - the glasses cost £400 so im trying to avoiud paying for anuther pair!

Zenni customer 23 Apr 2008, 10:28

I have being a zenni customer and all my family order glasses from them and since i live in the states, glasses arrive in 2 weeks tops... I actually like their service very much.

lazysiow 26 Mar 2008, 16:03

Zenni has usually been good within 14 days for me. In fact I can't wait to get back to the States and order a few more pairs.

yet another zenni customer 26 Mar 2008, 10:32

I have ordered through zenni many times and usually receive my glasses in two to three weeks. Once it even took less than two weeks. The one time that it took over one month was when my order included a pair of glasses for my friend whose prescription was very high, something like -14 with lots of cylinder. If your prescription is uncommonly strong that might be the reason for the delay.

russell 26 Mar 2008, 10:17

There is a customer service phone number on the Zenni website, and there is a statement that says you get faster answers from it than from email. Call it. I have done so and gotten my questions answered immediately.

zenni 26 Mar 2008, 09:24

anyone who lately ordered from zenni? i've been waiting for over four weeks now and they still haven't arrived... i alrady sent an emai but the adress is not in use anymore....the online-question form was also without response? anyone know what's happening with zenni? thank you.

Eye Tri 26 Jan 2008, 14:40

Optomist,

The post from Cut-in UK has some good information, but didn't answer your questions. When you look at a frame, you will usually see two numbers stamped on it. This set of numbers is the frame size, and is important to how the frame fits your face. Say the frame you are looking at is stamped 48 20. The first number is the horizontal width of the lens opening. The second number is the distance between lenses, and is the bridge size you asked about. The bridge size determines how the frame fits your nose. You also asked about temple length. On most temples, the part that bends down behind the ear is about 32mm ( or 1 1/4" ) long, so subtract that from the overall length. Probably the best way to figure out what works is to go to an optician's shop, try some frames on, and pay attention to the size numbers on frames that fit.

Cut-in UK  26 Jan 2008, 13:15

Optimist, the bridge measurement is non-critical, and depends on the design of frame. It is typically 18 - 20 mm. The important measurement is the PD(pupillary distance) i.e. the precise distance between the centres of the pupils when both eyes are looking dead ahead. This is to ensure that the optical centres of each lens are fitted in the frame in line with the eyes to optimise vision.( You need the PD and it may often be shown on an existing prescription, but not always.) If you examine a spectacle frame three sets of numbers are printed; usually on the temple ( side arm ). In order, they are; diagonal width of lens, bridge width and finally the full length of the temple from hinge to tip, all in millimetres.

If your existing frame has no visible numbers, it's probable that they have worn off with use. If you visit an optometrists shop, try a style that suits you, and make a note of the three numbers, which will give you an idea of the size of frame that suits you. You can then order, through the web, a similar style and size that will be likely to fit you well. In fact you can alter the fitting on the temples, by heating (hair drier or hot water) then bending,if they need adjusting. Hope this helps.

Optimist 26 Jan 2008, 03:33

I'm minded to order glasses from an online retailer but I see that one of the measurements they require is the bridge size. Has anyone any advice on how I measure this, or how I check the size of my present glasses.

Also I see that the length of the 'legs' (excuse if this is not the correct term) is to the end, whereas I would have thought the critical measurement would be to the 'bend' over the ear.

I'm sure you can tell I've not done this before

Melyssa 22 Jan 2008, 12:43

aviator -oo-

I checked the retrospecs site and I didn't notice any drop-temples. After my next eye exam, I will try some others. BTW, the first pair of metal frames I ever had were aviators, just like those of my cousin Melynda.

lazysiow 13 Dec 2007, 05:17

Yes they were quite slow and the frames didn't quite fit me either but at least they were cheap :)

Brille 13 Dec 2007, 00:51

LBW are a little slow but very good.

sourgrapes 12 Dec 2007, 14:10

Optical4Less now seems to allow between +12 and -12, instead of +5 and -5 for CR-39 using their webinterface. But there is still an extra fee.

http://www.optical4less.com/ourlens/#156normal

specs4ever 27 Nov 2007, 13:51

a little slower, but I liked them.

 26 Nov 2007, 09:45

Has anyone used LBW? Their prices and selection seem better than Zenni.

http://www.lbweyewear.com/

Bwian 15 Nov 2007, 05:31

I am very disapointed in Optical4Less this week as i tried to order a replacement pair of glasses which i have purchased from them previously. I wear progessive lens and i have always had a lens height of 26mm. In the past i have ordered at least six pairs of 26mm progressive lens. They have now changed their web site options and no longer offer progressive on this lens height. What a shame as i have always had perfect great glasses from them. Most of the frames i prefer have a 26mm height.

Phil 07 Nov 2007, 01:09

Sorry Katy. I'm just never quite sure with you!! Maybe you should treat yourself too in any case.

Katy 06 Nov 2007, 10:57

Eye Tri, Phil & George - thankyou, I'll try those. Phil - they're for bf, not for me! I'm not quite up to -7 yet!! :-)

George 06 Nov 2007, 02:34

Katy,

EyeBuyDirect.com did -10.00/-2.00 for me in CR39. Excellent service.

Phil 06 Nov 2007, 01:21

Katy, Glasses Direct do up to -8. And they are excellent with a good new range of designer frames. Some lovely plastic frames that would really suit you. Phone for a brochure: 08456882020. Or order on line at www.glassesdirect.co.uk

Eye Tri 06 Nov 2007, 00:25

I've never provided that information, and they've never asked.

royboy 05 Nov 2007, 16:08

eye tri --- do these guys insist on phone number / name of your eye doctor?

Eye Tri 05 Nov 2007, 14:23

Katy,

You might want to try www.eyeglassfactoryoutlet.com

I've had really good service from these folks for years

Katy 05 Nov 2007, 11:47

Can anyone recommend an online retailer that would make -7 glasses in CR39? I know O4L would probably do it as a special order but I was hoping to find one that does it as standard. I have looked at quite a few but they all say -7 is out of their stock range for standard index. Thanks :-)

zenni guest 10 Sep 2007, 21:54

Thanks specs4ever and mickey. Since I'm in New Jersey and my prescription is kinda strong I'll expect the order to take a few extra days.

specs4ever 10 Sep 2007, 20:13

Zenni was pretty fast - under 3 weeks. Goggles4U were reasonably quick, but very poor quality for the lenses.

mickey 10 Sep 2007, 19:42

I order from them all the time. It's always within 2 weeks to CALI. I'm sure it depends on the location you order from.

zenni? 10 Sep 2007, 18:51

Has anyone ordered from Zenni Optical lately? How long did your order take?

Original Tony 12 Aug 2007, 05:18

Great News!!

www.goggles4u.com have just updated thier range of specs with some great "designer" type models based on the ines worn by Al Pacino in the Ocean 13 film. Also,if you use the code 30RKU you will get 5% off the total order price.

lazysiow 31 Jul 2007, 13:39

They were fine, the frames were thicker and heavier than they looked on the site but Ive gotten used to them and quite like them now. The only thing to complain about is the delivery time, especially when Zenni can turn them around in about a week

sourgrapes 31 Jul 2007, 13:15

lazysiow

Did you ever receive your glasses from lbweyewear.com? If so, how were they?

jldx 21 Jul 2007, 00:19

I ordered a pair of single vision glasses for use at the computer from LBWeyewear on July 9 and received them on July 20. They were cheap ($15.50), but appear well-made, requiring only minor adjustment of the nosepieces. This response seemed quite fast (LBW is in San Francisco, I'm in midwestern US). Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for my bifocals from the optometrist, ordered July 5 at great expense.

Lenses are made of index 1.56 plastic, so a bit thinner than regular cr39, and are supposed to be antiscratch and uv coated.

Guest 17 Jul 2007, 12:55

Does anyone know of any online stores other than Optical4less which offer myodiscs?

glassesforeveryone 09 Jul 2007, 06:29

I ordered glasses from www.metsuki.co.uk.

They arrived today 9th July and I only ordered them on the 4th July. Not bad at all.

They are better made than the same frames from Dolland & Aitchson.

They also have a good choice, I'd recommend them to anyone.

Frank 09 Jul 2007, 04:43

I have just opened a package from eyebuydirect.com which arrived first thing this morning. The order was placed on 26th June.

They are progressive glasses, in the -10.00 range with a +3.00 add, are excellent in every way. the cost me about £40.00. Similar frames and the same rx cost me £190.00 a few weeks ago.I am delighted

tortoise 07 Jul 2007, 19:06

Hi, I just want to say that you don't have to tell O4L any stories. You can, for example, be upfront about glasses for GOC (not your real prescription) or any preferences that you may have. The only issues are whether they can actually do it and the price. If you see a frame you like just tell them exactly what lenses you want and ask for a quote. Good luck.

Hey sourgrapes and SZ6! 07 Jul 2007, 18:13

Why not try telling them that you wear contact lenses most of the time and already have a very expensive pair of high index glasses for a back up? All that you are looking for is simply a back up for the back up which will probably never ever get worn.

Cactus Jack 06 Jul 2007, 09:31

Sourgrapes,

CR-39 has very few downsides it's index is about 1.50. The fashionable thing (big market) today is very thin lenses which means high index. Most makers offer an antiscratch coating.

C.

Cactus Jack 06 Jul 2007, 09:27

SZ6,

I think Zenni uses mostly polycarbonate.

Sourgrapes,

You need to contact O4Ls Special Makings Department. I would try sending an email to admin@optical4less.com

C.

sourgrapes 06 Jul 2007, 09:22

I'm also curious about this. I noticed O4L only lets you order CR-39 up to -5. They insist on high-index lenses for higher prescriptions; I got stuck with 1.67's if I wanted to get the cheapest. There are distortions near the edges, as I've read is pretty normal with high index.

However, has anyone had any luck getting O4L to make them higher perscription CR-39 lenses? I know you can place custom orders; how much extra do they charge for such orders? Also, are there any downsides to CR-39 besides thickness (that's not really a downside, hehe)? I have also read they have less distortions near the edges. How prone are they to shattering or scratching?

SZ6 06 Jul 2007, 09:03

How accommodating are the various online retailers when it comes to catering to our OO desire for really thick lenses? I ordered some -19.75s from Zenni and requested that they bevel the lens edges as little as possible - just enough so the temples could close. They complied reasonably well, but I still feel like the lenses could have been thicker.

For those of you who have purchased from Zenni before: what frames did you get to maximize the lens thickness? Did they comply with your request well?

For those who have purchased from other online retailers: could you recommend a men's frame that's conducive to fitting really thick lenses? Say one that has the hinges set well back from the frame, giving the temples more space to close over thick lenses?

I'd love to get a pair that were around 20 mm thick, but am at a bit of a loss as to how to do this cheaply and effectively online.

regualrguest 05 Jul 2007, 04:46

not true. o4l works fine!

guest 04 Jul 2007, 16:13

O4L site is down.

sourgrapes 04 Jul 2007, 08:51

daffy -- Yeah. I'm glad online suppliers like O4L exist. I think it was about 75% cheaper (!) then what I would have paid at a local shop.

newglasses 27 Jun 2007, 03:06

about three weeks ago I ordered glasses from optical4less. today i received them. i was a bit worried because they have prisms in the lenses....but everything is superfine! i only paid 53$, the glasses would have cost a lot more here in switzerland. probably about 200$.

rx is:

right: +1.75 dpt -0.75 cyl 100 axis 5 pdpt base out

left: +1.5 dpt -0.5 cyl 90 axis 5 pdpt base out.

i can only recommend the service. it was fast, the quality is excellent and the price very moderate!

Jack 25 Jun 2007, 09:42

Just received a pair of glasses that i ordered from Zenni - first time i've ordered on line.

My precription is left sph+11.50 cyl+1.25 axis 5

right sph+13.00 cyl +1.50 axis 5

Cost was about £30, last time i bought glasses in england from a shop, i paid over £250

5 weeks from order to delivcery, Im impressed, I just wish they could make me a pair of bifocals as well

Gap 19 Jun 2007, 02:31

I just received today my glasses from goggles4u. I had some problems with them because i ordered them on march, they never arrived to me, but then they sent me another pair for free... I must say that 35USD for a frame and -12.50 rx is very cool and they look ok!!

lazysiow 21 May 2007, 17:08

apparently valueglasses.com hasnt been shipping out orders lately according to one of the review sites I posted below

Guest 21 May 2007, 14:50

Has anyone tried www.valueglasses.com? Any reports of note?

lazysiow 18 May 2007, 20:00

Well apparently they shipped them out tuesday and I got them today. Frame was a lot heavier and thicker than I thought. Overall quality was satisfactory but like the previous poster said, Zenni is better and faster.

frankie D 16 May 2007, 20:15

I had not had any previous experience with anyone other than O4less, which I found to be excellant. However I got 5 pairs of very hi mi from lbw for less than the price of 1 pair from O4less. Quality was pretty good, and they were up front with me in telling me 15 working days or more. I still prefer O4less though.

lazysiow 16 May 2007, 00:06

Zenni I like for the most part but they have varying quality. I ordered the same frame twice and both were very diferent in terms of metal quality, ear pieces and one had a crooked bridge (thankfully the worse pair). Other times the quality was fantastic, equal or better to a regular brand name at a chain store. Just like most chinese products, quality varies.

Someone suggested on one of the review sites to order a few pairs just in case (as you can always use them for backup). I couldn't agree more.

Is LBW normally that slow?

DWV 15 May 2007, 23:25

I ordered from LBW earlier this year, and the glasses arrived OK. They weren't as nicely made and packaged as the equally cheap glasses from Zenni that I ordered around the same time.

lazysiow 15 May 2007, 19:59

wow with that kind of response time I doubt I'll buy from them again.

There are literally a billion sites all with chinese manufacturer pricing now :P

frankieD 15 May 2007, 19:35

Give lbweyewear a couple more weeks. It took them 4 weeks to ship to me,and another week for the mail, but it was well worth it.

lazysiow 15 May 2007, 16:32

I took a chance with lbweyewear.com recently and it's been over 2 weeks, no glasses.

I've had better results from Zenni, Optical4Less and 39DollarGlasses (glasses even came in a week once).

So fair warning, I've also emailed them hoping to get a reply soon before I have to dispute the charges..

lazysiow 09 May 2007, 20:59

found some online store review sites

 09 May 2007, 12:52

Gap, the glasses usually arrive. The postage is very slow and the packaging is slightly conspicuous which causes delays at customs, depending in which country you live.

gap 09 May 2007, 10:35

hello there, did any of you buy from the site goggles4u.com ? I bought some spex on march 30 and did not receive yet. They don't answer to my emails. anyone tried this???

I noticed that Zenni Optical now offers prescriptions up to -19.75 for very cheap. Has anyone ordered very high prescription glasses from them? Did they take much longer to make than lower prescriptions? How was the quality?

Please use backup domain names http://optical4less.net or http://optical4u.com

Everything will be fine within 24 hours.

Bwian 05 Jan 2007, 05:36

Anybody know what has happened to Optical4Less? They have dissapeared off the net. I have purchased over 15 pairs of glasses off them and they were great. Does anyone know of another online optical site which does prism correction?

JC 26 Dec 2006, 23:25

Thanks for the suggestion random eye, but it looks like lensway also only carries them to -6.00. The Ciba Vision web site says they go up to -10.00 but I am beginning to wonder if those powers are actually manufactured.

Random_eye 26 Dec 2006, 19:37

Lensway.com might carry them in that RX, I know they don't check for an RX. So they are worth looking at.

JC 26 Dec 2006, 11:47

globallens.com only seems to sell 02 Optix up to -6.00; I believe they are made up to -10.00. I want to order some -7.00. Does anybody know any other Canadian online contact suppliers or any other way to get some shipped to the US without a prescription?

Smudgeur 19 Oct 2006, 04:47

Has anyone tried:

http://www.nuglasses.co.uk/

Cactus Jack 18 Oct 2006, 14:23

wannadoGOC,

I would suggest checking out www.globallens.com. They are in Vancouver, BC.

If you would like suggestions or assistance with GOC, you can post on the GOC thread or contact me privately at cactusjack1928@hotmail.com.

-12.00 is a reasonably good place to start, what is your current Rx.

C.

wannadoGOC 18 Oct 2006, 13:57

Cactus Jack,

I haven't decided yet I was thinking -12.00 or so

Cactus Jack 18 Oct 2006, 13:11

wannadoGOC,

What GOC combination are you thinking about?

C.

wannadoGOC 18 Oct 2006, 12:58

do you guys know of a place for contacts where they don't ask for a prescription?btw I'm in the U.S.

thanks

sher 18 Oct 2006, 10:39

Hi,

Did anyone ever use glassesdirect.com? Prices are so reasonable, tha I am questioning quality. Wear progressives so the cut of the lenses is of major importance, although this would be a spare pair. Thanks, Sher

CaliRN 13 Oct 2006, 16:44

Hi any and everyone....:)

Has anyone ever used discountcontactlenses.com to order online CL's?

Discount Contact Lens

Columbus OH

CactusJack, I tried globallens but it appears they only have soft lenses...

Thanks!

Michiz 22 Sep 2006, 10:15

In response to the previous problem I mentioned from the eyedoctor.com. I sent them back and the company redid everything. The glasses are now quite nice, and I have to commend them on their quick response, good communication, and overall customer service in regards to my original complaint. I'm not sure what happened the first time around, but now I do have a good quality product.

Cactus Jack 14 Sep 2006, 19:29

CaliRN,

Try www.globallens.com, they are in Vancouver, BC. If the ECP gave you a CL Rx, try Wal-Mart. They have very good prices.

C.

CaliRN 14 Sep 2006, 17:33

Cactus Jack,

No, thank goodness I got another Rx from a different ECP. Totally different....plus I'm glad I didn't use a semi-conversion from my CL Rx, it would have been off, too.

Now I just need a good online retailer for CL. I was looking at Vision Direct....more research for me!

Have a good night!

Cactus Jack 14 Sep 2006, 15:16

CaliRN,

Glad to hear you are pleased.

Did you order the glasses using the Rx you posted on 01 Sept.?

C.

CaliRN 14 Sep 2006, 13:55

Just wanted to take a second and tell you about my expeience with Zenni Optical. I placed my order just shy of two weeks ago. I was afraid it would be a month or so before I got my glasses...

Well, I received my glasses today, nicely wrapped and placed in a hard case. The glasses themselves are perfect. Even nicer in reality than onscreen. Great quality, and the Rx is perfect as well!

Very happy w/this retailer, I will definitely purchase more from this retailer.

Oh, and btw, much better quality than $39eyeglasses that cost me much more!

 10 Sep 2006, 21:15

You got it.

Michiz 10 Sep 2006, 20:37

I recently ordered a pair of glasses from www.theeyedoctor.com - I am nearsighted w/ single vis prescipt -4.5. Although their turnaround time was phenomenal, I was very disappointed with a few things: (1) the lenses are not set right in the frame (I can see space between the two); (2)I feel that the lens quality is questionable (ie: when I look at an object straight on it is clear, but if I turn my head to either side to view the object in my periphery, it becomes blurry - with my previous glasses this definitely does not occur.) Has anyone felt that lens quality from these types of internet sites differs in quality from say local optical centers? Any insights?

Michelle

CaliRN 01 Sep 2006, 12:40

Hi,

My CL Rx is:

Power: OD -8.75 OS -6.87

Base Curve: 7.65

Diameter: 8.8

I KNOW my CL Rx is right, it is the eyeglass RX I just rcvd (from a different doc) that I am questioning. That Rx is:

Sperical: OD -7.00 OS -6.25

Cylindrical: OD -2.00 OS -3.25

Axis: OD 82 OS 175

Since I trust my CL RX, I would like to know it's equivalent for an eyeglass Rx.

Thanks for any tips, help, advice, etc....:)

thanks so much for your help

Cactus Jack 01 Sep 2006, 10:52

CaliRN,

Yes, What is your glasses Rx.

C.

CaliRN 01 Sep 2006, 09:45

I meant to say Good morning ALL, not, al...:)

CaliRN 01 Sep 2006, 09:44

Good Morning al,

I just found this site trying to research online eyeglass and CK companies. It's great!

A couple of comments....

*I'm looking at zennioptical, looking for a discount coupon code?

and

*I ordered from 39dollarglasses, shiping took longer than expected, and when I rcvd the glasses, the frames were not at all the color I ordered, also they were horribly mis-shapen, I couldn't even wear them. They did replace the frames, very quickly, in fact, however the color is STILL not what I selected.....oh well. I also can't seem to see very well out of them...I don't know if the Rx is wrong or what???

*And last but not least....is it possible to convert a CL Rx to a eyeglass Rx...the power, specifically? I know it is not the same, but wonder if there is a formula for conversion.

Thanks all and have a great labor day weekend!

Cactus Jack 31 Aug 2006, 09:29

laulau,

I'm not sure how they handle the logistics of getting the glasses to you. I believe that for the US, they ship in bulk from China to their US office via air freight and then mail them on from there. For Europe, they may have a more efficient way to do it. The ideal thing would be to ship in bulk from China to a central European location and then mail them individually from there.

When you get them, be sure and check the postmark to find out where they were mailed from. With todays global communications and logistics, it is hard to know exactly where anything is really located.

C.

laulau - french 31 Aug 2006, 08:44

Yes but then how to explain why I had to order a pair on their premises 2 months ago and it left the United States? he says to me that that leaves China?

Cactus Jack 31 Aug 2006, 08:32

laulau,

Yes, that is why the price is low. I think the Chinese have a lot of experience making minus lenses.

C.

laulau - french 31 Aug 2006, 08:28

I ordered a pair of glasses at zennioptical it says to me that that Ci were to send at the beginning of their laboratory in China. Is what they have really a laboratory in China whereas the store and American?

I called back to Zenni today. They cannot find my glasses and are having to redo the order.I was told that they left the lab but did not make it to the distribution area for mailing out.another 2 week wait!!!if not more.

Bob 16 Aug 2006, 18:54

What happened to 8004glasses.com?

Ted 15 Aug 2006, 12:09

Ordered RX sunglasses from Zenni on July 31/06. I called today to see if there is a tracking system as I have not received the above. I left a message and they did return my call, but the glasses have not even been shipped. The sales lady said that they left the lab on Aug 6th /06 but have not been shipped to me. If they had I would have received a tracking number. I have to call back tomorrow and they will try and locate them.Anybody else have the same issues?

Did you have to provide a RX to them?

MaureenK 08 Jul 2006, 08:43

Eyebuydirect.com is the best online glasses avaliable. The less modern glasses go for 15 bucks with lenses. I took the rimless glasses for $49 with lneses. Go them in four days to little rock. i have shopped around eyebuydirect is the best value for money.

I will NEVER order from eyebuydirect.com again. Mr. Hessel, president of eyebuydirect.com, had called me and said I was going to receive the eyeglasses any day now, and he also said that he was going to issue a 15% credit on my cc. Their customer service is below average, and I'm not happy.

prism 21 Jun 2006, 06:42

anyone konw whow does lenses with prisms? haven't found any sites so far. thank you.

DWV 20 Jun 2006, 00:21

Highmyop:

There's been a lot of on-line retailers mentioned on this thread; select "see all posts" and you'll get the older posts.

Now, with a higher prescription I think you need to be careful to get the PD correct, since errors in pupillary distance can introduce unwanted prism if the prescription is strong. If you don't have an accurate measurement of your PD, like from the doctor's exam, or a previous pair of glasses, you might want try the budget optical stores like Sears Optical (when they have one of their $99 sales), Walmart Vision, or Costco. If you have a good used pair of frames, Walmart will put new lenses in cheaper than many online places charge.

Highmyop 19 Jun 2006, 23:16

Thx to u tortoise, will check it out. Best wishes

tortoise 19 Jun 2006, 06:13

Highmyope, Many routinely supply -12 to +8. 39dollarglasses.com is good(polycarbonate lenses, polished edges). Some go up to -20 and Optica4less goes up to -40!

Google "eyeglasses online". Good luck.

Highmyop 19 Jun 2006, 04:44

Any hints for online shops for blind bats like me with over -10 ??

Wayne 12 Jun 2006, 20:15

Has anyone had any experience ordering frames or lenses from eyeglass.com? I just found their site and they look interesting.

lazysiow 12 Jun 2006, 14:33

well I called and complained today. Couldn't talk to anybody, had to have somebody call me back...

frustrated 12 Jun 2006, 13:48

Well, Mr. Hessel, pres. of eyebuydirect.com, called me last Wednesday apologizong for the delay of the eyeglasses I ordered on 05/18. He told me that I should receive them any day now, if not that same day. He asked me to e-mail him as soon as I got the eyeglasses to let him know if I was satisfied. I had not e-mailed him because I haven't received the eyeglasses. I'm really frustrated about this. Yesterday, he sent me an e-mail to see if I had received the eyeglasses. I replied today in the morning telling him that I have not received them and I asked him to send me the eyeglasses via fedex, I think the ones he shipped on 05/30 were lost in transit.

lazysiow 10 Jun 2006, 04:53

Well it's been a week since I ordered from them and no shipping email or anything :P maybe they keep a low inventory of lenses and have to order.

LindaK 09 Jun 2006, 02:45

Woooah! Just got my Minstrel's rimless frame from www.eyebuydirect.com got them in five days to Michigan. Around here rimless are about three times what I paid. P.S. - Amenda--I saw the Philly plastic frame on a collegue at work, they are more suitable to a narrow face, maybe the Chives would be better for you.

 05 Jun 2006, 15:53

By the way, I'm in Southern CA, USA

 05 Jun 2006, 15:52

Ordered a pair of rimless from eyebuydirect.com on 05/18 and I still don't have them. I received two different e-mails one saying I should get them by 05/29, the other saying they were shipped on 05/30. I've sent them 4 e-mails and get no response. I'm not a happy camper.

I thought I was gambling with www.eyebuydirect.com but turns out this company is for real, got a great deal for rimless glasses probably one forth the price in Jersey. I don't need complicated lenses but they have those too. Enjoy. www.eyebuydirect.com

jenny0 14 May 2006, 07:35

Hi, Has anyone out there dealth with "A pair of Shades". I note someone mentioned them a ways back but I didn't see any positive/negative feedback.

thanks J

JamesGee 30 Apr 2006, 03:33

Amanda thanks for the tip i just got my glasses from www.eyebuydirect.com and they were 21.90-good quality with shipping, great service worth getting a few dosen't it?

DWV 24 Apr 2006, 17:07

Other places for replacement lenses:

http://www.opticallabdirect.com and http://www.wohloptics.com/pages/frames.php and http://www.eyeglasses.com/information/services/lenses_price.page

And if you have a plausible paper copy of a prescription, try a Walmart Optical store.

henry_c 24 Apr 2006, 07:08

Speccy Girl:

You could try www.opticclear.com

I used them a year ago and they did a great job.

speccy girl 23 Apr 2006, 22:23

Does anyone know where I can send my existing frames to have some stronger lenses put in please? Optical 4 Less used to do it but no longer ...

In my current prescription I also have bronze semi rimless. My old pair were black metal rectangular in shape.

lazysiow 17 Apr 2006, 06:33

Their price is even cheaper than zenni (which is my fave), pity most of the frames come in girly colours like pink and blue and stuff :)

ehpc 17 Apr 2006, 02:29

What other frames do you have, Lucy? Pete

Amanda 17 Apr 2006, 02:20

I would actualy reccomend www.eyebuydirect.com, their offer starts at 16.95, actualy its about 20 somthing with shiping and all that but shipping and service were ok and the glasses great.

Lucy 16 Apr 2006, 23:43

ehpc I am shortsighted but I don't have any like you describe !

ehpc 16 Apr 2006, 08:54

What other frames do you have,Lucy? Are you shortsighted? Do you have any black rectangular plastic frames with wides sides:) MY FAVE:)(Just in case 13.4.2006 23.33 poster on Optical Stores had forgotten:)) Or other bold colours? Red? Blue? What hair colour are you?Pete

Lucy 16 Apr 2006, 08:42

I posted here last month that I'd ordered from Zenni Optical and I was prepared to be disappointed. So I was really pleased when my new glasses from Zenni Optical finally turned up. http://zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=267&cat=10&page=1

Service wsa pretty slow but I can't fault the quality. Or the price!! I think I'll really enjoy wearing these they're just so different

jojo 29 Mar 2006, 09:18

Don't purchase from goggles4u.com. This company is in pakistan and if you choose the free shipping, it can take anywhere from 4 or more to get your order. But the biggest reason is, they mess up your prescription. I ordered 2 pairs and both were wrong (which took 2 months to receive). The one of the replacements were wrong also. Out of 4 pairs of glasses, I could only wear one pair. Plus they don't reply to your emails. Only way I got them to respond was to file complaint with the company that processes their credit card payments.

Lucy 19 Mar 2006, 14:14

That's a relief, I'm pleased to hear it. I managed to place my order for those gorgeous glasses before I'd seen the previous post. But if it all goes horribly wrong they're still very cheap. Worth the risk.

lazysiow 19 Mar 2006, 12:15

zenni has been great for me. IMO better than 39dollarglasses.com, a little slower but for the price the quality has been great

specs4ever 19 Mar 2006, 06:26

There has been quite a bit of discussion about Zenni, and none of it has been good. Better you should be dissappointed before you loose your money Lucy

Lucy 19 Mar 2006, 04:07

Hello. Has anyone had difficulty placing an order on the Zenni Optical website? I've tried several times and get to the very end before it tells me *order processing error! Payment processor declined your order. Please review your data and try again*

I wanted to order these frames, which I think are fantastic. I'll be sooo disappointed if I can't

http://zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=267&cat=10&page=1

DWV 13 Mar 2006, 22:16

http://www.opticallabdirect.com does executive bi and trifocals.

Robert2 12 Mar 2006, 11:08

Do any of the online retailers offer CR-39 lenses in high powers (-7)? All of them I have visited offer only high index, at least for that prescription.

glasses 10 Mar 2006, 05:30

what companies do executive bifocals, which can be ordered online? I only know of Eyeglass Factory Outlet, but they are rather expensive. If anyone knows another company it is greatly appreciated.

thanx

glasses

DWV 08 Mar 2006, 13:55

I wasn't impressed with Walmart's frames. Maybe the safety frames are OK. But they are a good place to go for replacement lenses; take your old frames or get some from a thrift shop or Ebay.

Jen 08 Mar 2006, 08:37

DON'T PURCHASE FROM WALMART. I have had them break - just fall off my face when the bow broke 4 times in the last 8 months. I have only owned the glasses for 8 months too. They are junk frames. At least don't get the George brand from them.

Carol 06 Mar 2006, 13:41

Does anyone know where I can get FT35 trifocal lenses in at least 1.60-1.65 index material? Bifocals seem to be available, but I haven't seen trifocals anywhere.

 03 Mar 2006, 18:14

why don't you use our sponsor ? they are fab .

 02 Mar 2006, 21:19

no name, try globallens.ca

no name 02 Mar 2006, 14:22

where can i order contact lenses from that dont ask for a dr.'s info?

JohnnyB 02 Mar 2006, 06:17

Dmon, I'm not familiar with either GLASSESONWEB.COM or ALLBRANDGLASSES.COM, but you seem to be correct about ownership. Both sites are registered to the same person in Canada and appear to be hosted on the same server. Good luck.

JB.

dmon 01 Mar 2006, 20:12

DONT EVER MAKE ANY PURCHASE FROM GLASSESONWEB.COM AS WELL AS ALLBRANDSGLASSES.COM. They are same company, Glassesonweb has benn closed due to the fraud.

once i bought a frame, paid $300, they sent me damaged item. They never take it back, either.

Katy 27 Feb 2006, 02:28

CircleBox - No, I am in Wales and we don't have Walmart here - but we do have Asda which is part of Walmart, and the opticians in there let you buy just frames. If they are priced complete with lenses, just ask what they charge for lenses, and they should deduct that from the total. With the two-for-one offers, or any special offers, that usually only applies if you get complete glasses.

CircleBox 26 Feb 2006, 19:15

Katy, have you gone to a Walmart and done this? That is what I am thinking of doing... I wonder how the prices range. I would rather have a pair of glasses that look good and spend extra money. I was thinking too about all those comercials that say '2 complete pair of glasses for such and such price (generally under $100). I guess I will have to look around...

Katy 26 Feb 2006, 11:07

Circlebox - I do that all the time, it's fine. I just say 'I'd like these, but with no lenses', and then get the lenses put in at a discount place. They don't ask why, but if they did, I would say I didn't have my rx with me, or that I could only afford the frames at the moment. None of their business anyway! Where the frames are priced complete with lenses (like Specsavers here), they deduct the cost of the lenses. Once I saw some nice 'budget' ones in Specsavers, complete price £39, asked for them without lenses, and they came to £9 - bargain! :-)

CircleBox 24 Feb 2006, 21:13

OK so I am sick of ordering glasses online because they either don't look good or break. If I went to say a Walmart optical, could I find frames that I like and just buy the frames with plastic lenses? Then I could send them to Optical4less.com to get the RX that I wanted. Also if people think it is possible, what on earth would I tell the people at the optical store? I could say my uncle is an eye doctor in a really small town and there isn't much to choose from and I just wanted to pick out a nice frame and he does the lenses free... I would feel like an idiot, especially if they say I can't do that. I guess I could call first because if they say no, I just won't go there and there is no harm done...

ehpc 05 Feb 2006, 14:36

Um...........er............no there isn't much choice. Hardly a stylist's dream. Clearly the frames they couldn't sell:) Have fun Pete

Katy 05 Feb 2006, 13:53

Hi Pete - no, huge metal frames. There isn't much choice: http://www.specsonthenet.com/free.jsp but they are great for my collection :-)

teddy 03 Feb 2006, 12:38

I just got glasses from goggles4you. The postal carrier and my hubbie both thought that the package was suspicious, being from Pakistan and wrapped up in fabric. They settled down when I told them what it was. My only problems were that the specs needed adjusting so that I could see properly and that they did not roll and polish the edges as I asked. But, what can you expect for 26 bucks? I am going to try to find out if there is a local optician that will do the roll and polish for me.

ehpc 03 Feb 2006, 07:29

Huge plastic frames,Katy? :) Do tell................:) Pete

Katy 03 Feb 2006, 06:45

Yes I got some free glasses from them, a couple of weeks ago. They are great, apart from the huge frames :-)

 03 Feb 2006, 06:33

I've just go onto Specs on the net's site to see where my 'free' glasses and have seen the order has been cancelled!

Has anyone received their free glasses from them as I most certainly didn't cancel my order!

tortoise 31 Jan 2006, 06:09

I found the site owner's experience with Goggles4U (includes photos) quite interesting.

http://www.eyeglassretailerreviews.com/goggles4u2.htm

tortoise 31 Jan 2006, 06:03

Here is a well written website where online retailers are reviewed and compared:

http://www.eyeglassretailerreviews.com/

I think the website is just starting out so more reviews are needed.

-- 25 Jan 2006, 09:02

can you get your credit card co. to retract the payment? Tell them they were sent without your authorisation. Do this quick as there is generally a time limit for this.

Once that happens, can you send them back postage due? Be sure to get a signed reciept

Jolene 23 Jan 2006, 05:07

Have just had a nitemare experience with Coastal Contacts www.coastalcontacts.co.uk. Just so that you all know, if you click the Buy Now button - thats you bought your lenses - you don't need to enter credit card details - you also don't need to enter Doctor's details (apparently according to them this is not required in the UK). My main frustration is that I clicked Buy Now, saw the request for Doctor's info and thought forget it - don't have an up to date prescription just leave the site. After receiving an email confirming the order (which stated payment by giro or credit card) - I sent them a reply saying No thanks, please cancel. Well the contacts arrived regardless! - too late for me however as I'd already got myself down to the opticians, had an eye exam and paid offline. They are now saying I have to pay to return the lenses! even though I didn't order them AND cancelled the order. I'm sure they offer good service if you just buy as normal, don't try anything complex like returning or cancelling your order. I have suggested they clarify their website...if the doctor's information is not required they should say so - If I'd known I would have continued and paid. But I'm glad I didn't - they have been so rude - their comment was "we won't pay for returns just for the good of our health!" - what about for customer service then?

Brille 15 Jan 2006, 10:30

The lenses from Gogglse4U seem to be positioned in the centre of the frames giving the same thickness at the inner and outer edges. I suppose you get what you pay for. On the positive side I have received 2 very good pairs of glasses with a correct PD, only because I chose the approprate frames. The customer service is good and the sewn bag packaging is a nice touch.

Katy 14 Jan 2006, 14:04

Hi - I had the same problem with the wrong p.d. from goggles4u recently - I ordered -6 glasses for my boyfriend whose p.d. is 60, and after wearing them for a while he started seeing double! When I measured the p.d. in them, it was 72 - and like yours, the lenses are right in the centre of the frames. The cylinder axis is also a few degrees out, and with a cyl of -1.75, it is causing a bit of blur.

I suppose with lower rxs, the p.d. doesn't matter much, and so not too many people complain. I might try & get them replaced but not sure if its worth the hassle - they were only £15.

Sad 14 Jan 2006, 00:18

Its said they can't even make you a proper P.D. Glasses without correct P.D. are unusable . I think I will not order from this place . BTW I have heard a lot of bad stories about this company . Good luck .

tortoise 13 Jan 2006, 07:07

Hi, that problem with the wrong PD is very disappointing. What a pain! I ordered frames that put the optical centres in the lens centre, (1 lens width: 46mm + nose width: 19mm = PD, 65mm) so I didn't have that problem.

I wonder if they had been getting complaints about glasses arriving damaged because mine arrived incredibly over-packaged. They were wrapped in cotton-wool, inside a fancy case. The case was in bubble wrap inside a thick styrofoam box. The whole package was covered in sewn cloth with my address penned on it! I've never seen anything like it.

Hi 13 Jan 2006, 06:30

I also purchased 2 pair from goggles 4 u in the -18 range, They were fast, I would say there quality is in the fair to good range. I ordered plastic lenses and was given glass, which chips very easily. Upon arrival 1 lens in each pair was poped out of the frame, which I was able to fix myself. Most importantly, they will not make my glasses with a proper PD. I require a PD of 56, they are giving me a PD of 68 to 70, which is way to wide for me especially with such a high Rx. They advertise high index, CR-39 and crown glass are NOT high index, but my lenses are thin, this is because they will not give them to me with my PD. they are centering the lenses to the frame, there is equal edge thickness on the inside and the out side edge, its great that they are thin but I can't wear them because of the induced prism I am getting.

Good luck with them

tortoise 13 Jan 2006, 06:18

Hi Brille, I got glass lenses, thinking they would be a little thinner than CR-39. They have perfectly flat fronts with no AR coating so they flash quite nicely. The edges are rolled and without edge polishing they appear white but not bad, I'd say. I'm very pleased with the workmanship.

Old old friend . 13 Jan 2006, 04:00

Special making page has been added back .

More info and new pics will be updated soon .

Brille 13 Jan 2006, 01:15

Hi Tortoise: Did you choose glass or plastic lenses for the -18 range?

tortoise 12 Jan 2006, 17:49

Glasses in the -18 range that I ordered from Goggles4U have arrived. I'm impressed with their prompt service and good quality given the low price.

Based on this one order I would recommend giving them a try.

DWV 07 Jan 2006, 22:42

re Optical4Less. It may restore customer confidence a little if they fix the spelling mistakes on their site. The word is "rectangular", not "retangular".

focusfix 23 Dec 2005, 03:30

Just noticed this discussion forum and thought it might be of interest to all that SpecsOnTheNet.com are still giving away prescription glasses from this following link http://www.specsonthenet.com/free.jsp

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

P.S. Keep an eye out for exciting developments being launched on www.GlassesExpress.com early 2006

JJ 07 Dec 2005, 22:27

I placed this at another post, but it's worth putting here as well --

Hi DWV,

Have you ever gone to Sears Optical? I was there a number of years ago. They gave me the wrong prescription. They made me wait two hours while the three young clerks socialized w/their friends. The frames they sold me keep bending. And... they billed my insurance twice. Once at the end of the year, and once in the begining of the next year. The only reason I found out is because I looked at the insurance EOB and called to find out why I received duplicates.

And guess what -- they would not assist me at the store. I was told to call a central office and take it up with them... for a mistake (or maybe not a mistake) that they did.

SEARS OPTICAL... Well... pretty much S*C*S.

JJ.

What a load of nonsense! 8-(

Riney 29 Nov 2005, 18:09

Beware of optical4less. The sell secondhand lens. I ordered two pair eyeglasses from them, both came with wrong

RX. They sell the lens which people throw.

Samantha 28 Nov 2005, 15:44

Is anyone having trouble linking to optical4less?

Kokopelli 28 Nov 2005, 08:22

Just a few days ago I ordered a pair of glasses and upped my regular Rx with one diopter. I also made them flat top bifocals for fun.

Brille 28 Nov 2005, 00:59

Optical4Less offer the best quality over the internet. It seems that there is a small minority of anonymous attention seeking posters intent on damaging their reputation.

Kokopelli 27 Nov 2005, 20:25

If you look at all the criticism on O4L, you'd never place an order. I have done so in the past and was very satisfied. I totally go for the fact that the banner is on this site and I don't think Wurm would go along with them if they were ripping us off.

Who is spreading these stories is a "mystery" to me.

tortoise 27 Nov 2005, 19:38

It has been a while since I last ordered from Optical4less but I have received 3 pairs of well made extremely high Rx glasses from them in the past and I appreciated the fact that O4L understood that they were for GOC. I hope they are continuing to provide this unique and excellent service.

Try them.

specs4ever 27 Nov 2005, 16:00

I have suggested Optical 4 less to a number of my friends, and all of them were very satisfied. I feel that there is a definate effort to hurt O4Less' s reputation

Tenten 27 Nov 2005, 08:36

I suggest you people better read the following review of Optical4less.com before placing you order. This Store is so

junk.

Hi there guys - i've jus spotted a new one and they look fantastic - they have gone for the user friendly look - no hasstle and easy to use. Have a look: www.SpeckyFourEyes.com

Old Friend 18 Nov 2005, 02:15

Brille , we offer lens replacement no more . Im sorry for that .

Dr.S. 17 Nov 2005, 12:26

A year or so ago I corresponded with 39dollarglasses.com (located in upstate NY, USA) about high power CR39. They said they don't regularly do CR39 for above -10 but can do it as a special order - apparently they know where to get high power CR39 blanks which they mainly use for sunglasses, since CR39 takes tinting better than other plastics. I have not ordered from them.

Brille 17 Nov 2005, 00:33

Old friend : That's good news. Will you be offering the lens replacement service too?

Old Friend 16 Nov 2005, 11:06

Brille , we still doing special orders .

But for some reasons the link was removed for a bit . We'll add it back soon .

For special order enquiries please contact optical4less email

admin@optical4less.com

Brille 16 Nov 2005, 02:22

Cactus Jack: You asked about O4L and CR39 lenses on the site feedback and news thread. O4L used to offer a special order service (for CR39 etc) through emailing Albert. As far as I know this service is no longer available and O4L will not make any custom orders.

Does anyone know of a good lens replacement site for high prescriptions?

DWV 26 Oct 2005, 00:22

Thanks to scanners and laser printers and picture editing software, you don't need a green eyeshade and a jeweller's loupe to alter a prescription. There are some cheap optical stores, the kind that have the world's ugliest free frames, or you can take in some old frame and just have lenses installed, and not pay much more than a lot of online places. And you get a proper fitting, no shipping charges, and the thrill of getting that phone message "Mr X, your massively thick executive trifocals are ready, but we just loaned them to the restaurant next door so they could grate vegetables on them."

Probably.

 25 Oct 2005, 07:58

So can you buy from all of these places with out having to so a RX?

If not it would be cool to have a list of all the places you can buy from.

The glasses I purchased about a month ago from Zenni (rimless) were very well made, came in <2 weeks and the edges definately look polished to me (whithout asking for them). I was VERY happy with their product and for the price will definately order from them again.

g 18 Oct 2005, 21:09

Does anyone know if Zenni does lens polishing?

DWV 11 Oct 2005, 14:10

You can purchase eyewear without a prescription from almost all of the online retailers mentioned on this thread.

Bill 11 Oct 2005, 11:27

Where can one purchase eye wear without a prescription?

Marcus 08 Oct 2005, 02:29

Hi Tania R, I ordered a pair of Hugo Boss's from them some time ago, and they came decent. Just curious, what frames and lens are you ordering? What's your Rx?

Tania R 08 Oct 2005, 00:55

Re kelly23 04 Sep 2005, 06:33-- I also am thinking about buying some spectacles from apairofshades. Did you end up ordering from them? were they any good? I think I'm going to 'risk' it but if you have any feed, or if anyone else has some feedback then please let me know. Thanks :>

Sorry about my rash promise last night - got dumped a shed load of crap that needs doing by 9am tomorrow! If you could all email me large cups of strong coffee, I must just stay awake to get it done. Huh. Why do i go to work?? must be for money.

Don K 04 Oct 2005, 13:03

Got my package from optical4less today - glasses exactly as ordered.

After making the two purchases I would definitely buy from either place again. The shipping times were withen a few days of each other and the only notable difference is myeyeglasses.com sent the galsses in a nicer case.

Brille 04 Oct 2005, 00:55

Sorry, I meant to say directspex.com.

Thanks for the links. I noticed Spexdirect offer lenses up to -20. Also designer frames.

Thanks for the info about the online sellers, I might look at all of them and repost the list with a mention of their max strength lenses (which is useful for those of us with double digit prescriptions!)

Once again, thanks for the list - most of them are new to me!

Don K 30 Sep 2005, 22:29

I receaved my pair of rimless hingless from myeyeglasses.net today - I can't believe how nice they are, for years I've been paying much more for frames I don't like as well. I'm still waiting on my order from optical4less.com made on the same day. They have sent me conformation of shipment so it should just be a little while longer, I will let you all know how those turn out.

you 29 Sep 2005, 05:23

I have ordered from goggles4u.com. It will take 4 to 5 weeks to the US. If you ordered a very high RX, -18 and higher, they will only make them in glass. As far as using high index material, they don't! What they do is ignore your PD measurment and place the lenses optically centered into the frame, that way they can limit edge thickness and the is equal on both the inside and outside edge. They seem to never give you a direct answer to any of your questions. Good luck!

CircleBox 28 Sep 2005, 22:40

Anyone else ever ordered from goggles4u.com? I am having some issues as far as my order goes, they have great communication with e-mails but I am not get my questions answered. Not sure if I would deal with them again. Still have not gotten my glasses, they say that they come from Pakistan...

CircleBox 19 Sep 2005, 20:37

I ordered from goggles4u.com, I had not heard much feedback on here about them. We will see how fast they arrive and the quality and I will let you know. I only paid $24.99 but the reviews on the website were good.

Don K 15 Sep 2005, 15:40

I just ordered from optical4less.com and myeyeglasses.net - I will let you all know how it goes once I get them. Here's looking forward to the end of overpriced frames.

Katy 15 Sep 2005, 05:29

Peter - thanks - it would be nice to get them replaced and maybe I am being cynical, but I really expect them to either say they haven't received them, or that I have scratched them myself. Going on what I have read about them in previous posts (and should have read before I ordered!), and my own experience, I don't think they are particularly honest. When I sent them the photo (a jpeg), they said they couldn't open it, and then refused to say what file types they _could_ open - a bit dodgy. I'm glad yours were fine though! I think it is just a gamble really - some people will be lucky - but the complaints about them do seem to outnumber other retailers by quite a few.

Peter 07 Sep 2005, 21:25

Katy, I've ordered from a number of online places and while the 2 pairs I've gotten from Optical4Less have both been excellent when I received them, I did have a problem with Goggles4U. They said to send the glasses back, which I did, and they returned a new pair to me. I think this seems pretty normal. You may wonder if they will deliver a new pair, but they have an equal right to wonder if you actually want to keep the pair you've complained about (yes, there's a scratch, but I don't think that negates the point). I think you should send them back and expect a new pair. (You still might not want to order from them again, but at least get your 2nd pair of glasses.)

CircleBox 07 Sep 2005, 21:24

Peter- Yes I would still like to find a home for my glasses. The RX is -3.25, with a PD of 63 and there is no astigmatism in them. Let me know what you think.

Peter 07 Sep 2005, 21:21

CircleBox -- sorry, been away a while. If you're still trying to unload those glasses from Zenni...Is there any astigmatism correction in those glasses? Do you have the exact prescription and PD measurement?

Katy 06 Sep 2005, 15:38

Reporting back on the plastic specs I ordered from Optical 4 Less, as promised... one pair was fine but the other came with a big crack / scratch across the front of the frame. I sent a photo and asked for a replacement frame but they are refusing unless I send the glasses back. I don't see why I should pay out extra, for postage costs to Hong Kong, when the fault is theirs, and I would have no guarantee that they would replace them. Has anyone had a similar problem? Or managed to get a replacement without actually returning the glasses? I definitely won't be ordering from them again! :-(

specs4ever 05 Sep 2005, 20:23

Jem, a friend of mine used Optical4less recently, and he was completely satisfied - his daughter's glasses were about $163.00 US for a beautiful pair of rimmless in around a -12.50D prescription

jem 05 Sep 2005, 17:04

No, they are 4 years old. Started scratching within a week. I don't want the same product. The frames I chose came with polorized sunglass lens clipons that are still completely scratch-free and I wear the clipons 80% as much as the glasses.

But, thanks just the same for the imput.

Sandy 04 Sep 2005, 09:41

Jem, how long did you have the glasses? Pearle should replace the lenses if it was within a year. I returned one pair with no problem and they redid the lenses for no charge. Take care.

kelly23 04 Sep 2005, 06:33

Has anyone ever purchased from apairofshades.com. I'm considering doing so but can't find any consumer feedback on them.

thanks

jem 04 Sep 2005, 05:44

hi- I'm in need of new specs. Got my last pair at Pearle Vision microthins plus. Very disappointed as they scratched so easily. Worse pair I've ever had but also the thinnest. I have a -9 perscription and would like to try purchasing hi-index quality len pair online - perhaps Seiko lens. Can anyone recommend an online store with an emphasis on quality with a good price. I paid $400 for the Pearle pair. If I could get a GOOD pair for 200-250 I'd consider that worthwhile. Scratch-resistance is paramount.

Any suggestions or positve buying experiences would be appreciated. Thanks

CircleBox 03 Sep 2005, 07:24

Peter and anyone else interested in the glasses I am trying to get rid of... Go to zennioptical.com, click the $19 metal tab on the left of the screen, mine are the third from the bottom, frame #4636. The actual color of the frame that I am offering is silver, the one in the picture is grey.

JJ 01 Sep 2005, 22:03

Katy: My rx L -3.00 -0.75 x70 R: -4.00 -1.25 x 74. The lenses from Goggles4u look like they are high index they are thinner then my rimless eyeglasses made by a local optician.

Katy 01 Sep 2005, 11:04

JJ - what sort of a prescription have you got? I want to order some rimless from them around -6. I just went on the 'live help' thing to ask (again) what type of lenses they use - they said 'They will be made in CR39 high index material' - which makes no sense to me! But for $25 I think I will just order them and see what comes :-)

Wei 01 Sep 2005, 09:30

Do anyone order 1.9 index lens on line? Can you make recommedation for best price please?

JJ 01 Sep 2005, 09:25

Just received rimless eyeglasses from Goggles4u. They arrived from Pakistan so I had to sign for them. I would order again they look just like the picture and I can see great.

Peter 31 Aug 2005, 21:21

CircleBox - Is the frame one that they still have on their web site? If so, can you say which one?

CircleBox 31 Aug 2005, 14:04

Dunno if anyone has ever done this before but I ordered glasses from Zenni optical, there is absolutely nothing wrong with them except I don't like the color on me. I was thinking of putting them on ebay but I thought I would post here and see if anyone would be interested. They are semi-rimless, -3.25, silver. They are just sitting there collecting dust, which is a shame, but I am sure someone could enjoy them or add them to their collection. I would not ask for much as they were only $30 or so including shipping.

specs4ever 30 Aug 2005, 15:19

I had recommended Optical4less to a friend of mine who has a very strong prescription. He didn't seem to take me up on my recommendation, so I wasn't too worried that my recommendation would backfire on me. However, he has just called me to thank me for letting me know about them. He says his glasses are the nicest pair he has ever had in his prescription(around -24D) . He also ordered a pair of rimless for his daughter, who was told that rimless was impossible to make in her around -12D prescription. He tells me she loves her new glasses. And the best part was that he got both pairs for less than what one pair would have cost him.

So, while this is not an out and out endorsement for O4less, this is a positive report.

Ruth 25 Aug 2005, 11:22

Thanks for your quick replies guys. Some food for thought there. I particularly like the groovy make up glasses in the link, although getting a lens fitted in my rx seems like it might be very expensive.

try this 24 Aug 2005, 14:38

Cactus Jack 24 Aug 2005, 12:04

Ruth - my eye doctor has some low power (plus/minus 0.25) lenses on a 6 to 8 inch shaft that he occasionally uses for a quick check. I never paid much attention to them but I suspect that a lens of any power could be easily mounted in this type of lens holder.

You didn't mention your Rx but if your Rx is about the same in both eyes, you could ask an optician to make a lens of slightly less than your distance Rx so it would focus at the distance from your face to the mirror X2 (the light has to go from your face to the mirror and back to your eye.

Another possibility would be glasses on a "stick" that the ladies used at the opera before contact lenses. Also, you mihgt be able to use an old pair of glasses by removing the temples and attaching a rod on one side. If the frames are metal, I'll bet a clever jewelry maker could do it an about 15 minutes while maintaining access to the screw that locks the lens in place.

C.

Ignotus 24 Aug 2005, 11:43

Ruth, I have seen glasses made esp. for putting make-up on. Each lens flips up, leaving room to apply make-up while seeing with the other eye. Your optician will know about these. Use lenses from an old pair so that it is not too expensive.

Ruth 24 Aug 2005, 10:47

I'm partially sighted and extremely myopic too which means it's very difficult for me to apply eye make up. I had a brilliant idea the other day, a lens (myodisk) on a stick. This would be ideal as I could hold it over one eye with one hand while applying make up to the other eye. Does anyone know where I might be able to acquire such a thing?

Katy 19 Aug 2005, 02:35

Steven - I hope it works out. I think in the past people have usually managed to get a refund, but minus the paypal fees, after sending the glasses back.

Has anyone ordered rimless from www.goggles4u.com recently? They are an incredible $25, but the lens options are very confusing - they say their lenses are all hi-index, but the drop-down lists show CR39 as the standard/cheapest option. I emailed to ask and got this:

'All lenses that we are using are hi index lenses. In rimless frames we can only use CR39 material due to durability issues. We assure you if you place order your glasses will be produced with high index lenses.'

Now I am even more confused! I would prefer low index - does anyone know what kind of lenses they use?

DWV 18 Aug 2005, 23:32

If you search past threads, I think you'll find some negative comments. Also, notice that you can't actually buy anything; "This merchant account has been closed." Too bad; there's a couple of frames there that I'd actually wear. I emailed them with a question a year or so back and a human replied to me. Maybe the web site was just too much hassle for too few sales, but maybe you can still order over the phone. Try the contact info on this page:

http://www.eyeglassesworld.com/contact.htm

Steven James 18 Aug 2005, 23:23

Katy,

No, they are offering me nothing. They are being totally uncooperative and this Fiona woman even implied (not subtly at all) that I was just trying to take advantage of them in some way....maybe you will be lucky though?

Lazysiow 18 Aug 2005, 22:25

http://www.eyeglassesworld.com/

Anyone ever order from this place? They seem low rent even for an online store but they have a damn nice choice of rimless frames, even while avoiding the ones that seme to be badly cut.

I was thinking of using this place as a cheap way to get a rimless style.

Katy 18 Aug 2005, 04:34

Steven - are they offering you a refund? I ordered 2 pairs with plastic frames and a similar rx a few days ago - now I am worried! I will report back :-)

Steven James 17 Aug 2005, 23:26

I have bad news to report about Optical 4 Less. It is the second time we have ordered from them, the first time was for my wife in a fairly strong prescription. This time, I ordered for myself a brown plastic frame in a -2.5 (my Rx). The frame and colour were confirmed correctly on my confirmation email. The other day I received the glasses, but the frame was what could only be described as a luminescent PINK! Obviously (well, obvious to me) I cannot wear these.....and O4L have been COMPLETELY uncooperative in this matter, refusing to send what I ordered. I recall from the first time a helpful man by the name of Albert, but he seems to have evaporated on this occassion.....and I have just hit a brick wall. I really am not one of those detractors who wants to flame O4L....this is a real experience that has happened to me and want prospective buyers to beware. They ARE cheap....but their attention to detail is highly lacking!

Thanks!

 11 Aug 2005, 06:38

I have the opitcal4less.com website but cannot find an email address on it to contact them. Please can someone say how to get in touch with Fiona/Albert as I have a question about a complicated prescription. Thanks in advance.

 11 Aug 2005, 02:04

-14. I sent them an email for a specially thick pair and Fiona was most co-operative and replied by return with details of lens thickness (c12-17mm) and cost. Very reasonable.

Gobbler 11 Aug 2005, 01:59

I emailed Opticall4less and got a reply from Fiona. When I asked for extra thick lenses she forwarded my mail to Albert. I got a message from him after a couple of days. So I think it's good to put a little pressure on Fiona ;-)

radioman 10 Aug 2005, 19:09

-14

I am sorry to hear that too.Had hopes of some myodiscs (special order).

-14 10 Aug 2005, 18:58

Optical4less used to be very cooperative but I think those days are gone. I emailed them to ask about putting some -2 blue transition lenses in a new pair of Oakley wiretaps. I also asked about getting some myodiscs in -14. Their lens info didn't list the availability but Albert would usually try and accomodate.

well, unfortunately, Albert has moved on to their technical department and Fiona has replaced him. Her reply was less than positive. They don't do lens replacement, she said, and then went on to describe some non-myo high index lens in which i had NO interest. I wrote back and once again asked if they offered a -14 myo and have received no reply. Looks like it is time to find another online retailer.

PS In the past I have excellent results from them. Both in quality and price.

Russell 05 Aug 2005, 10:42

19dollareyeglasses.com is now zennioptical.com

CircleBox 04 Aug 2005, 23:09

What happened with www.19dollareyeglasses.com? Website isn't working, says something about domain suspended.

tortoise 23 Jul 2005, 06:27

They are 1cm thick at the outer edges and would be thicker but the back surface levels out 4mm from the edge. The left lens has no cylinder and is plano base, the right lens has some cylinder and it is on the front surface. I assume they are CR-39 but I don't know for sure.

me 22 Jul 2005, 21:19

What is the index? How thick are they? Bi-concave?

tortoise 22 Jul 2005, 16:35

Zenni Optical just came through for me! -17.75 low index semi-rimless for only $36.00. The order took about 5 weeks. They arrived in a spiffy case, with clip on shades. The workmanship seems fine although not fancy. I'm very pleased given the great price. 8-)

Wurm 16 Jul 2005, 13:20

Nick, try

http://www.springwhales.com/contacte.htm

Good luck.

Nick 16 Jul 2005, 12:24

Thanks Fritz. I'm not the same Nick, although I have recently experienced a big increase myself.

I can't even find Whale on the internet, so don't know where to start getting a spare part.

Fritz 16 Jul 2005, 10:38

Nick,

Are you the same Nick who went fulltime a couple of years ago? I seem to recall that you and a guy named Marcel were experiencing the same prescription increases. Wonder whatever happened to Marcel. I loved his writing style and always wondered if he were a French Canadian.

Anyway, you might be able to get the spare part directly from the manufacturer. I needed a new temple for my nearly new Raybans and contacted them directly after getting their 800 telephone number off of the Internet. They sent me both temples for a price that was less than a third of what a new pair would have cost me. It's really annoying to have to replace an expensive pair of glasses just for one part!

Let us know if you have any luck.

Nick 16 Jul 2005, 08:02

Does anyone know where I could buy a replacement nosepiece for my "Whale" swimming goggles? I've looked online but can't find anywhere. I don't want to replace the other bits.

Thanks.

Hi Gobbler 11 Jul 2005, 19:07

If you are in the US, there is a chain called "For Eyes" that often runs deals like 2 complete pairs with normal plastic lenses for $99. I once asked if there was a prescription maximum for that price. The clerk, who may have been the optician, told me that he usually recommends high index for higher prescriptions, but has had customers order regular plastic in a -10Rx, because they usually wear contacts and the glasses were only to be worn for a few minutes in the morning and at night. I'm sure that if you told the clerk that you wore contacts 99.99% of the time, that they would respect your decision and not try to upsell you to the high index. Oh, there is also a chain called "America's Best" that has 2 pairs for $69, but I have never dealt with them.

Gobbler 11 Jul 2005, 06:40

hi guys,

does optical4less still do 'special making orders'? I e-mailed to get low index lenses and they said they only do 1.56 of high index lenses...

what happened?

is there another supplier for 'special orders' I can turn to?

Mark 11 Jul 2005, 06:18

I ordered a -16 pair from Zenni a while back, semi-rimless. There were a couple problems - one lens had a distortion in it, one of the lenses had the groove for the 'fishing line' cut unevenly, and one of the 'fishing lines' broke while the lenses were in their case after I had the glasses perhaps a year. So I've been afraid to order strong prescriptions from them. I've also ordered -3 and -6 glasses from them, no problems.

New Jersey boy 10 Jul 2005, 09:17

I also check my mail box everyday, I'm really look forward to get my new glasses. Did anybody ordered glasses with high prescription from them??? I was planning to order them next but I don't have a prescription....

Johnnyb555 07 Jul 2005, 22:17

I don't think that 19 days is too much to ask, knowing that they probably make the lenses overseas somewhere. I've been happy in the past, and as long as they keep the prices this low, you bet I'll order again and again. Although I must admit... when I ordered my pair, I checked the mailbox every day...

 07 Jul 2005, 22:15

I don't think that 19 days is too much to ask, knowing that they probably make the lenses

CircleBox 06 Jul 2005, 21:49

From the date that I ordered from Zenni it took 19 days to get to WI. I am still satisfied with my order- although I wish I would have realized that there is a color difference between grey and silver because the silver is very bright and I wanted the grey. I would order from them again.

New Jersey Boy 06 Jul 2005, 12:59

Hello Circle Box, I also Ordered glasses from Zenni and I'm waiting to see how they will look like, I also have my fingers crossed, I just hope I get my glasses soon. did it take long to come???

tortoise 05 Jul 2005, 14:11

Circlebox, I ordered glasses from Zenni right after you did and with a much higher Rx. Still waiting, fingers crossed. 8-)

CircleBox 05 Jul 2005, 12:30

My glasses just arrived from Zenni today. I am pleased with the service although the frames are not what I expected but that is my own fault due to a color mix up. I think that as long as the RX is mild, there shouldn't be problems ordering from them.

CircleBox 24 Jun 2005, 18:28

Still no glasses from Zenni. I read their "return" policy and I love it. Our satisfaction is valued so if we are not happy with your order you can return the glasses within 4 weeks and for ONLY 1/2 the cost of the item plus shipping and handling- you can get new glasses. If they mess up your order, shouldn't they refund you in full or give you new glasses?!?!?!

optifan 21 Jun 2005, 15:09

In reply to last post

I cant comment on their mail order service as i called personaly.

However it was near christmas and as they were not busy they made up my specs while i waited in about 15 min.

May be worth a try.Let us know what you think if you do.

 21 Jun 2005, 11:20

optifan -thanks for your reply! I was a bit skeptical because they have not replied to my email but now I have heard that they are good I may go for them! Did you have to send in your prescription? and what happens with regards to postage?is postage included in the price? the website seems a little vague in this respect!

Please help 20 Jun 2005, 22:09

Can anyone tell me a website so I can buy contact lenses in the us without a prescription???

thank you

optifan 20 Jun 2005, 14:50

I have used AXIS several times as they are local to me and the quality is very good .

They are used by all the independant opticians that do not have onsite labs.

Prices are also good .Last time i had s/v new lenses in my old frame and they charged me £25.

 20 Jun 2005, 14:32

http://www.axisoptical.co.uk/

Anyone had any involvment with this firm? If so how were they? I want stronger lenses in my glasses but dont want to have to provide a prescription!! If noone used this firm can anyone suggest any other?! (I know I can get glasses off the net but I really like my current frames!)

CircleBox 19 Jun 2005, 21:09

I sure hope it doesn't take several months. The only thing that bothered me is there was only one option for shipping. I would rather pay more for say 3-5 day delivery. We will have to see, however, I was hoping to have those glasses before July.

 17 Jun 2005, 23:18

you will eventually get your glasses from zenni but it could take several months

CircleBox 17 Jun 2005, 17:34

I just ordered from Zenni, -3.25 strength semi-rimless glasses. I will have to see what happens with that. For $19 you can't go wrong, I just hope that they turn out and I don't have problems.

Julian 12 Jun 2005, 01:20

Filthy, my sweet: I want to continue an old conversation; can you send me your e-mail address please?

Love and kisses, Jules.

 11 Jun 2005, 20:11

I think Upset Customer is one of Zenni's competitors.

Filthy McNasty 11 Jun 2005, 14:18

I think that Zenni is like any other mediocre place - some customers have no problem, others have nightmares. The price they charge does not lead one to expect first-rate service.

justsomefeedback 11 Jun 2005, 06:27

sorry was lurking and saw the talk about Zenni. I just ordered and got a fabulous pair of progressives, only downside was it took 3 weeks but the quality is very good and you can't beat the price.

I ordered rimless and my RX is on the mild side.

:) lurker bee

Johnnyb 10 Jun 2005, 20:17

Regarding Zenni Optical, my experience with them has been positive in the past. I wonder what changed? Personally, it doesn't matter to me if an optical shop is licensed in my state (or licensed at all), as long as I can order whatever script I want :-)

J.

upset customer 10 Jun 2005, 18:09

Zenni optical is not licensed in the State of California. Their service is terrible and they are very rude. I placed an order 10 weeks ago and i was told 5 weeks ago that I would receive a refund. I am still waiting. I have filed several complaints against this company. Buyer beware something very fishy about this company. Zenni sucks !

Filthy McNasty 05 May 2005, 17:11

It describes teh curvature of your eye. You must either have it measured professionally (easy if you go in and say you want to buy colored plano contacts) or take a guess and hope for the best (not recommended). Personally, Mine is 8.7. BC is less important with thin lenses like dailies that comform more esasily to various curvatures.

Radioman 05 May 2005, 13:27

Filthy

I was wondering if you or anyone on ES could explain base curve as it relates to contact lenses..

Radioman 05 May 2005, 10:35

Filthy-

Thanks for the link..

Filthy McNasty 05 May 2005, 08:51

The link below will only work if you delete the full stop at the end. For some reason it was made part of the link.

Filthy McNasty 05 May 2005, 08:50

Try http://www.globallens.ca/index.shtml. Quick service and rasonable prices, with a wide selection.

Radioman 05 May 2005, 06:04

Anyone know where I can purchase (on-line) contacts without an rx for +17d or so?

bJaxx 04 May 2005, 03:33

i ordered from specsdirectuk.com too.. the service was just fine.. received my glasses withing 7days.. pleasantly surprised at how much i saved over the high street!

Filthy McNasty 03 May 2005, 07:23

Although Goggles4U has a small selection of frames, my experience with them was very good. Zenni's quality was exceedingly poor on the rimless design I ordered (very loose, poor alignment, etc), but I suppose given the price I should have expected that.

Luke 03 May 2005, 05:51

I've ordered both rimless and semi-rimless from zenni. (I have never ordered a metal-rim pair from them.)

The rimless pair was fine, though they looked a little different from what I expected.

The semi-rimless: I've ordered two pairs - one with a weakish (-2/-3) Rx, which turned out fine, one with a very strong Rx (-15) which had a couple problems - one of the lenses was distorted and the fishing line around one of the lenses was crooked (they messed up making the groove). At some point, this fishing line broke, despite little wearing of these glasses.

Bottom line: this is the cheapest store online, I believe. Their quality is distinctly lower than most other places - so you sort of get what you pay for. But I think as long as you don't get a really high Rx, the glasses *should* be OK. I've heard stories about difficulty with customer service (no responses to email, etc). But haven't had any major problems myself.

 02 May 2005, 15:06

The ones that I got were not edged very well so the lens pops out and when it is in they are uneven. Stay away.

CircleBox 02 May 2005, 13:37

Was there a post about the www.19dollareyeglasses.com Zenni website awhile back warning to NOT buy rimless glasses from them because of problems? Reason being, I found some nice frames that I like and they are semi-rimless but I don't want to order them if they are going to screw up or be of horribly quality. Anyone else order from Zenni?

Mark 22 Apr 2005, 13:27

College Girl -- good luck in your search. If you get a chance, post how things go -- I'm curious.

Not sure if your vision is still changing a lot, but for what it's worth, I think -6 is a prescription where it's still pretty easy to get nice looking glasses. That's around the range where I am too. I've seen glasses around -12, and at that prescription, you have to spend a boatload of money to get them to look at all normal, and even then it's a stretch. At -6, it's really not too hard to get a nice looking pair of glasses. Even rimless, which tend to make glasses look thicker than other frame styles, really look fine at -6 -- I've had several people compliment mine (and I presume they aren't optic obsessives). These lenses are polycarbonate, which are cheap/"free" at a lot of online stores.

College girl 21 Apr 2005, 17:08

Leon and Mark, thanks for your advice. I might go to some stores this weekend and I'll let you know if anything exciting pops up. I hate those websites that say free lenses, unless your vision sucks, which means over -4. The costs of crappy vision...

Mark 21 Apr 2005, 09:41

College Girl - I think the best combination of price and trustworthiness might be www.39dollarglasses.com. I don't know that they have a frame real close to what you want, but their prices are really good. I think they have a pair that sort of looks like what you want.

You're going to have to pay more for higher index, no matter who you go with. 39dollarglasses provides polycarbonate lenses for $39. It costs $50 extra for very high index (1.67) lenses. That's still real cheap for a pair of glasses. At 47mm eyesize, your -6 script will have some thickness in polycarbonate, but not a whole lot. The 1.67 index lenses will really be quite thin...probably thin enough that someone would think (from the thickness alone) that they are weak glasses. Either way it's a good deal.

www.zennioptical.com seems to be the cheapest place online, but some people here have had problems ordering from them and their quality is inconsistent.

Leon 21 Apr 2005, 01:38

College girl: you might want to try http://www.eyewearcentre.com. It's an Italian eye wear store. Great customer service, quite cheap.

These look a bit like the ones you posted: http://www.eyewearcentre.com/grncgi/gladitem.pl?ITMCD=DKAR_8610TITANIUM&LNGCD=eng&SESID=IFAFVI-KG5

By the way, don't worry too much about lens thickness, these frames are quite small. Perhaps polycarb lenses would be the best choice for you.

College girl 20 Apr 2005, 23:00

Hi, I need new glasses because I haven't replaced mine for a couple years (I mainly wear contacts). But, since I'm in college, I don't have a lot of money and the vision insurance through my school sucks (20% off glasses and lens).

I want something like these, http://www.eyeglasses.com/product/1062164405-1062164405 but since my prescription is L: -6 and R: -5.25 I want high-index lens. I know some of you like them thick, but I don't want that. Does anyone know of any places online I could get glasses like these cheap? Or stores, I can do that too. Also, is www.eyeglassesworld.com a legit site? It looks kind of sketchy.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

spexfan-

How well do you see with the spex you mentioned in your March 23rd post? 20/20/? Any blurring or distortion? I imagine like mine things seem to be smaller..

Brille 12 Apr 2005, 09:43

Friskee,

I have also noticed that the register option is not working?

friskee 11 Apr 2005, 07:28

Does anyone have a way to contact goggles 4 you beside e-mail and register

that are not working?

mindhunter 24 Mar 2005, 14:37

check out specsdirectuk.com complete pair of spectacles from £14.95 also have a large range just ordered mine from them seem to be the cheapest and largest range in uk online

mindhunter 24 Mar 2005, 14:35

spexfan 23 Mar 2005, 14:20

My order from goggles for U arrived on Monday.....it took less than a week using their DHL delivery option! A few minor quibbles with the glasses which are -18's in a 55mm eyesize aviator frame....

They supplied glass rather than the plastic lenses I asked for and the lenses seem to be cut from a large bowl (45mm) myodisc blank. So the net effect is that they're very, very heavy but only about 9mm thick at the edges. The pd is also about 10mm wider than what I specified so there is some induced prism to get used to when I first put them on. The rest of the Rx seems pretty accurate.

Anyway, no one else on the web can touch them for speed or price, so I still feel my $36 USD (!!) was well spent.

twistree 21 Mar 2005, 18:51

I ordered over a month ago and have gotten nothing. Each phone call is met with "we'll call you back" but they never do.

 19 Mar 2005, 16:43

Good luck with Zenni!!! They cut the right lens to small for the frame and it won't stay in!!! After eight weeks of e-mails, I can now send them back for them to evaluate. Who knows.

Filthy McNasty 19 Mar 2005, 16:28

Zenni's quality is extremely variable. However, for the price, I find it worth the gamble. Generally rimless styles seem to give them a great deal of problem.

CircleBox 18 Mar 2005, 22:17

Anyone ever order from Zenni Optical at www.19dollareyeglasses.com? I think I remember reading something about Zenni Optical but I wasn't sure. I found a frame that I think would look good, however I don't want to spend the money if Zenni Optical is not reccomended. Thank you.

Visitor 17 Mar 2005, 10:50

Smudgeur - Thanks for the pics. What's your prescription?

Smudgeur 15 Mar 2005, 13:36

Yes they were prescription lenses - ordered on the 18th Feb and rreceived in the UK on 11th March.

Mine didn't confirm the prescription on the order either, but they are absolutely perfect

AL 14 Mar 2005, 19:33

CORRECTION to the below post. I ordered last month (February).

AL

AL 14 Mar 2005, 17:21

Smudgeur

Were they prescription lenses? I am waiting for my order to come in. I ordered on March 21, and they were shipped the 24th.

I hope they come with my prescription lenses as the order form sure didn't confirm it, just the type of lenses.

AL

Smudgeur 14 Mar 2005, 09:19

It was really not worth getting that excited about - it was a shabby little bag with my name and address written on in felt tip pen! Just a bit different to the jiffy bags and printed labels you come to expect.

The glasses got a road test over the weekend and work very well, darkening quickly.

Clare 14 Mar 2005, 08:57

Leelee - I love the idea of the bag, but then I love things from that part of the world. Lets being seeing it eh?!!

leelee 14 Mar 2005, 08:45

never mind

Smudgeur 14 Mar 2005, 07:32

Why?

leelee 14 Mar 2005, 06:08

can you post a pic of the fabric bag too?

Smudgeur 14 Mar 2005, 05:47

Thanks Jules - the price was nice too! (£34.50 for transitions lenses inc. P&P)

Julian 14 Mar 2005, 05:36

Those look really cool, Smudgeur; well chosen!

Smudgeur 14 Mar 2005, 02:32

The frame is not on the site anymore, however I took a couple of pics which you can see here:

Visitor 11 Mar 2005, 12:41

Smudgeur: That site does lenses upto -20.00, which is unusual online. What frames did you get, and what prescription?

I'm intrigued about the fabric bag.

Smudgeur 11 Mar 2005, 10:28

Just received my order from www.goggles4u.com -ordered on 18th February. They appear to be very good quality.

I bought rimless frames with plastic transitions lenses. The cost £34.50 including shipping from Pakistan (in a bizarre fabric bag!).

They were very very well packed though. I'd certainly recommend them.

Brille 10 Mar 2005, 03:35

I have ordered from eyeglassesinternational and I had no problems. Melissa was friendly and cooperative over email.

Shoe 08 Mar 2005, 15:33

Ordered contacts from Lensway.com. They arrived in 10 days from Sweden to US.

Shelley 08 Mar 2005, 14:55

Ordered contacts from Coastal Contacts for delivery to UK. First batch got lost in British postal system, second batch arrived safely two weeks after dispatch. Very considerate and courteous service throughout so would recommend them. If using Coastal Contacts from outside US allow plenty of time for delivery

satisfied 08 Mar 2005, 03:47

I recently ordered some specs. from eyeglassesinternational.com.

This order was treated with promptness and courtesy, and my e-mails to Melissa were answered immediately and efficiently. I can recommend them.

I ordered glsses on-line from 1intheeye on 18/01/05 and not received them to date(02/03/05).They cleared my payment on 20/01/05 and despite e-mailing them several times I have had no reply from them.Whenever I telephone throughout the day there is never an answer.I would advise people to be wary of ordering with this company as after they take your money they do not appear to be contactable!

mattp 18 Feb 2005, 06:24

norm--

I ordered a pair of glasses from optical 4less back in the fall. It took nearly 2 months for them to arrive, but as they were only a spare I wasn't in any hurry. Most of the waiting occurred after they were shipped. When they came, the box had been opened and there were customs (U.S)stickers all over it. My guess--terrorism check on a box from Hong Kong. Once they arrived, the glasses were fine.

Be patient--your glasses may be tied up like mine were--Matt

 17 Feb 2005, 18:38

To the USA, took about 2 weeks for me to get my order in from Goggles4You

Guest 17 Feb 2005, 14:11

I would echo the previous contributor's comments about Optical4Less. I tried to order from them.... not very helpful at all, bordering on the rude.

norm 17 Feb 2005, 09:58

Well here it is six weeks after placing my order with Optical4Less and I still don't have glasses.

My glasses should have included progressive, transition type lens in the HL007 frame with -2.00 and -1.75, with +2.25 adjustment for old eyes, a simple order, nothing complicated.

After a bit of time passed and I did not see a change in "status order" screen I emailed then three times to get feedback. I got no bounced emails, so assume they got them.

It was a month later when I tried to cancel the order in a fourth email I finally got a response.

They claimed they had sent out an email to me three days after I ordered to question the order. I will give them a plus for finding a mistake in the order. However when they heard nothing from me they did nothing even though I had given them my phone number in the "comments" section of the order in case they needed it.

Their excuse was that they had had server problems.

One would have thought knowing this, that they would have resent the emails out, but no, they did nothing.

If they had had server problems I should have gotten bounced emails, so I question their excuse.

Then they promised the glasses would ship in another week, so I waited and cut them some slack, but cancelled the order 24 hours after the second ship date passed and there was no change in order status. I tried to fax them to cancel as well, but got no pick up after many times of trying.

I sent out two other emails when I saw no change in status, one a "cancel email" and two days after the second drop dead date I got an email saying they were closed for the week for vacation and that the order had shipped as scheduled, even though there was no change in status.

When checking the "mail order tracking button" which is supplied by them, the order shipped 8 days later than the second drop dead date, so she lied in the email. So even though I cancelled the order, they shipped the glasses anyway.

Needless to say I have contacted my credit card company to dispute the order, so should not be billed.

I placed another order with another company 48 hours after the drop dead date and hope I have better luck with them.

Stay away from this company. With no phone number, you have no way of knowing what is happening with your order.

This is the first time I have placed an order with an on line company and so far have been unimpressed.

 16 Feb 2005, 20:18

i noticed that goggles4u offers free worldwide shipping. what shipping method was used? how long did order take?

 16 Feb 2005, 17:29

I ordered from goggles4u.com -- Comes from Pakistan, and I ordered a -8.00 cylinder, for only USA $25.. And they did a GREAT job also.. Had it made out of glass instead of plastic.. I can't believe the sharpness of glass lenses.

I ordered my real RX from them, but since I like being able to see further clearer, I added -.50 to my RX.. so that effectively made it:

(R) -2.50 -8.00 36

(L) -2.00 -1.25 25

Guest 15 Feb 2005, 23:42

Does anyone know of any online retailers who can satisfy my curiosity for high cyl. lenses?

Henry_c 15 Feb 2005, 13:32

I have ordered from O4Less and I was very happy with the outcome. I have no complaints against them.

Recently I used www.opticclear.com for lens replacement. The service was very good. Emails was answered really fast by Janet.

Brian-16 11 Feb 2005, 10:18

Radioman-Its ironic you mention this as a college friend of mine recently (2 weeks ago) ordered a pair of glasses from the same place and has heard nothing, and they charged his credit card. The 800 phone number goes straight to an answering machine. He tried the local Florida number, and thats been changed.

Filthy McNasty 11 Feb 2005, 07:05

I bought a pair from O4L. The frame quality was somewhat better than I would have expceted for the price, and the lenses were good. All in all, I must say that what I got was considerably better than what I expected, all things considered. I also had reasonably prompt communication from their people.

radioman 11 Feb 2005, 05:21

To all on ES...Beware of an outfit called eyeglassesinternational.com and are located in Parkland,Florida. No human to talk to and my ISP returned all e-mails after purchasing glasses and having my credit card charged nearly a month ago !

Bass 11 Jan 2005, 20:30

I purchased from O4L and they are the nicest pair of glasses I ever had, very good quality. Since I had to get the 1.8 high index (to help cut down on the thickness) I paid around $120 US, I'd be willing to bet if you purchased the $29 dollar version the quality would be lower.

Katy 11 Jan 2005, 15:42

Electra can't post on here because her server is blocked by the website. Most people on here know that.

 11 Jan 2005, 14:21

What's this Electra asked me to say ... is someone having a laugh. And all this conspiracy about sending to someone else's address. Yeah right.

Katy 11 Jan 2005, 12:36

Electra asked me to post to say that she ordered some glasses from Optical4Less and she is really happy with them. She ordered rimless prescription sunglasses with progressive lenses and a graduated tint. She didn't tell Albert it was herself ordering, as she wanted to test them out and see if the criticism was justified or whether a lot of it was posted by competitors, so she had the glasses sent to a friend's address. She says the quality is excellent, better than she would expect from the local retailers, and they arrived in 3 weeks even though it was the Christmas period.

Mark 10 Jan 2005, 06:15

Pam - Can you say a little more about your experience? I've seen several people complain about the customer service from O4L, but most people have said the les quality was excellent. I'd like to know more.

Thanks!

pam 08 Jan 2005, 05:33

yes, I have just had a bad experience with o4less. I was very disappointed in the quality of the glasses. I felt I should have paid a little more. Maybe try 39 dollar glasses, I have heard no neg feedback about them.

Henry_c 07 Jan 2005, 07:55

Brille: I couldn't find it on their website so I don't think they do.

I found another online store offering lens replacement. It's in Singapore and called opticclear. A tad more expensive than O4L.

If anybody have used www.opticclear.com please let me know.

Brille 05 Jan 2005, 05:15

Does anyone know if Optical4Less still offers the lens replacement service?

CircleBox 03 Jan 2005, 21:33

I would have recieved my glasses in 2 days from 39dollarglasses.com but I was not home to recieve the package. I paid for the standard shipping which was 4-5 days but it came much sooner. Also I am very pleased with my new glasses, it is difficult to order glasses online without being able to try them on but they had various face shapes with the glasses so it was easy to figure out if they would look good on you. I highly suggest the use of 39dollarglasses.com for anyone looking to get new glasses without proper doctor information.

Johnnyb555 31 Dec 2004, 21:48

There was an article a few days ago in the paper about the Canadian equivalent of the USA's FDA, wanting to stop sales of prescription drugs to the US. I wondeer if this also means a stop to contact lens orders?

 31 Dec 2004, 13:33

So I've ordered some glasses online and I have a couple of questions:

1 - where can I go to have them fitted - the frames are a bit crooked

2 - where can I purchase a designer brand case (my glasses are Armani but they came with a cheap generic cloth case)? Thanks for any sugestions

CircleBox 27 Dec 2004, 21:49

Just read through all of the threads, it sounds like putting false doctor information for 39dollarglasses.com is not an issue. I am excited to get them, the only problem is that you don't know how they are going to look on you but, for stronger glasses... I DON'T CARE!

CircleBox 27 Dec 2004, 21:26

Instead of sending my glasses to get the lenses replace I just ordered from 39dollarglasses.com but they asked for doctor information and I made up a name and gave them my disconnected cell phone number. Has anyone else ever ordered from 39dollarglasses.com and used false doctor info. and if so, did it still work? I tried to order contacts off a website once, they had taken the money out of my account but wouldn't send the contacts, something about when they called the eye doctor(I gave them the real information) and the doctor said I needed an eye exam so they wouldn't send the contacts but I ended up getting my money back. I will have to see. If anyone has every ordered from 39dollarglasses.com please let me know. THANK YOU!

Four Yeux 16 Dec 2004, 13:05

I might as well add my sixpence worth. I have ordered twice from O4L ( once bitten twice not shy) both times unsatisfactory. I have sent many e-mails to no avail. I guess feedback is only for compliments.

Russell 16 Dec 2004, 12:29

I warned you all about O4L many, many months ago when they had just begun to post on ebay. At the time, no one listened to me about the poor service and the lack of caring. But I was right, wasn't I?

SG 15 Dec 2004, 18:42

Only the rimless/hingless HL007 frames are good at O4L. But rest of frames are so so and are not of very good quality. These are the frames that sell for about US $10 here in the USA. So all in all, after my bitter experience, I have come to conclusion that O4L is not such a heck of a deal and is very risky on top of that. The O4L bastards seem to mess up lots of orders lately. I wish there was more competition online to put these cheats to where they belong.

 14 Dec 2004, 07:08

so the moral of the story might me to always travel with a prescription

Scruffy 14 Dec 2004, 00:16

Another hands up on O4L : They sent me a completely different semi rimless frame and lense shap to the one I ordered....fortunaltely they wherent unwearable :o) But it could have been a disaster as i needed them at the time.

Just a thought for U lot - not really online but in Malaysia recently I could not believe how cheap glasses are.

130 to 180 ringgit gets you top line frames and lenses complete - thats about 45 to 60 aussie dollars - thats not bad.

oUt

Scruffy

Bwian 13 Dec 2004, 22:50

I agree about O4L. Just received my new glasses and paid $49US for clip on sunglasses. No clip ons arrived with the glasses and they do not answer emails. I am very disapointed with that as the quality of the glasses is great

SG 12 Dec 2004, 16:39

O4L is good as long as they don't screw up your order. I got my glasses and frame color is not the one I ordered and they are willing to do nothing about it. Even after seeing the photos of my frame they insist that they sent me right frame. Only the color blind can't differentiate between a copper and a gun metal frame I think. They rarely respond to your emails if they mess up your order and do nothing to fix it. So buyers beware. If your order is messed up your are SOL.

CircleBox 01 Dec 2004, 09:23

I do not have the old lenses because when I sent my glasses to optical4less they did not send the old lenses back. I guess I will probably have to send my glasses out, I do not have an RX to give to a local optical store so that would probably not work. Thank you for you help!

D-W-V 01 Dec 2004, 01:17

Do you have an old pair of lenses that came from your current frames? That'd be the best way. If the optical lab happened to have the same model frame in stock, or have the dimensions for that frame on file, that could work. Email the online opticians and see if any of them can do that.

Really your best bet is a local optician. They could order the lenses in, then fit hem to the frame while you wait, even if they're not a 1-hour operation.

CircleBox 30 Nov 2004, 11:16

Does anyone know where I can get new lenses without having to send my frames? I do not want to be 2 or more weeks without glasses. I have sent several e-mail to different websites. I did lens replacement with optical4less but I can't find the information on there now. Any help would do.

Shortsighted but delighted  25 Nov 2004, 07:46

Hi there, I have recently found out about Glasses Direct and have to say (despite initial scepticism) that these boys know what they're doing. I ordered my first pair of glasses from them in September and they were delived within ten days. I expected them to break after a week, but they are stil going strong and seem to be of equal quality to those available on the high street. You should seriously give them a try (apparently the company was started by a twenty-one year old wiz kid; move over Richard Branson!)

Foureyes Prim  25 Nov 2004, 07:34

I have worn prescription glasses for many years and have often been shocked by the high street prices. I once left a particuarly expensive store over £250 pounds short! Those were the old days. Recently my son informed me about a new business producing glasses for as little as £15.00! As you can imagaine I was very intreigued and looked them up on the web. I am pleased to say that two months down the line I have recieved three wonderful frames and will certainly be using the suppliars again. They go by the names of 'Glasses Direct' and they forfil their promises. I advise any glasses wearer to try them!

Filthy McNasty 01 Oct 2004, 16:06

OK, OK. How can one argue with the recollections of one of the most venerated of our number

Julian 01 Oct 2004, 15:22

Filthy, my sweet: when I was in college I got a new pair of glasses that made my eyes hurt. It was the only time I've ever had my eyes tested by an 'ophthalmic medical practitioner' and he put no cylinder in the left lens. I wasn't happy with them and went back; he satisfied himself that my acuity with them was 6/6 and sent me packing. But as long as I wore them (and he was the guy who insisted I should wear them full time) my left eye hurt. So it is possible.

Love and kisses, Jules.

Filthy McNasty 01 Oct 2004, 09:29

I think most people take any post that says a pair of glasses "make their eyes hurt" with a grain of salt. I certainly do. However, as with any Web-based business, on-line eyeglasses providers need to be approached with a certain degree of caution, particularly in view of the hassle of getting the product replaced or adjusted when it's got to be shipped overseas. No matter how good the retailer, mistakes are inevitable at some frequencey. That frequency may be low but is never zero. I certainly appreciate that some retailers have been active in seeking out our little forum and offering us their services. It's a big help for those who need to find a way to satisfy their fascination thgough a non-threatening channel.

Sherlock 01 Oct 2004, 09:04

I, for one, doubt KK's authenticity.

Why would an organization go to the trouble of setting up an elaborate web site only to have substandard merchandise? California is highly regulated and wouldn't allow a schlockmeister to stay in business for long.

At $25 a pop they are dependent upon repeat business. And, it will take them sometime to recoup the cost of setting up the site.

Frames coming out of mainland China are extreamly inexpensive, as are blank lenses made here, and abroad. So, they can make a profit, even with this low, low price.

I suspect KK has an interest in a competitor, and wants to protect it at all costs. Not everything you read is sincere, you know.

I intend to risk a few dollars and find out if they have a quality product, or not.

KK 30 Sep 2004, 11:31

I order a pair from eyeglassesworld and they arrived. The frame looks awful and my eye has been hurting . went for an exam and they said the new glasses aren't the right prescription. I emailed them many times but got no reply .

I'll never use them again . Not recommanded .

D-W-V 30 Sep 2004, 01:54

Has anyone shopped at http://www.eyeglassesworld.com ?

Prices are very low and there's some cool frame styles.

CircleBox 22 Sep 2004, 09:43

I just recieved my lenses from Optical4Less and I am very pleased, not only with the lenses but with delivery time- all the way from Hong Kong. However, I wrote a note with my print out saying I would like my old lenses back, maybe they don't read english or understand because I didn't get those back. I will know for next time. I started out with a -2 in each eye because I didn't know what my eyes could handle. I will get used to these then get stronger lenses. I thought with a -2 they would be somewhat thicker than my other ones but they were not. Stronger lenses next time!

DWV 15 Sep 2004, 01:37

I didn't buy from Retrospecs because a local optician had the exact same frames cheaper. Don't assume the mailorder outfits are always cheaper.

Eye Tri 14 Sep 2004, 15:54

Henry

I purchased a few frames from Retrospecs a few years ago and was pleasently surprised by the relatively short delivery time.

Henry 14 Sep 2004, 11:34

I have just ordered an Anglo frame (http://www.retrospecs.co.uk/product_details/default.asp?pid=1166&s_id=2&c_id=1) from http://www.retrospecs.co.uk.  I am based in the UK and would be eager to hear of what other people have bought and whatt this company's delivery times are like. Hopefully I'll receive these frames later this week!  Will let people know.

Regards,

I just ordered contacts from Coastalcontacts.com and they did ask for Dr. information, I just made anything up...will let you guys know what happens

 25 Aug 2004, 11:41

I've ordered from both Zenni and Eyeglass Factory Outlet and they both send out without requiring a signature. And I've been quite pleased with both of them, price and quality wise. The only negative is not being able to try on frames before buying them.

Can anyone recommend contact lens companies that do not require a prescription but rather allow you to put in the information on your own? I have a prescription but it's two years old, and specifies on the paper that it is good for one year only! Thank you.

JJ 25 Aug 2004, 07:21

Brian-16

Two weeks from the time the order was placed. I have ordered x3 from O4L and have had to sign for the package each time. Twice picked up the package at the post office but that may because I live in an apartment and they won't leave the parcel at my door step.

ps - for zenni and 39dollarglasses.com, I've put in fake doctor's info and it's been OK.

It's possible, though, that they will start doing some kind of verification. I've noticed that some online contact lens vendors have started doing that. <not sure how they do it or what exactly they verify, though>

DWV and CircleBox,

Eyeglasses.com has a very professional website, but somewhat premium prices.

An option I'd consider is www.39dollarglasses.com - I haven't ordered replacement lenses from them, but I've ordered new glasses from them and have been quite happy with both the glasses and the service. I think they charge 39 dollars for replacement (polycarbonate) lenses. If you want something other than polycarb, a different place is likely to be better.

zennioptical(.com?) is probably the cheapest (I think they'll do replacement), but some people have had service trouble with them. Their quality isn't fantastic, but seems to be fine with low to moderate prescriptions (I've ordered -6's and -15's from them; the -6's lenses were fine but the -15's had an optical problem).

Brian-16 25 Aug 2004, 04:55

Mnyclp

Thanks for the information...I may try them when I get into college.

D-W-V 25 Aug 2004, 02:04

CircleBox:

there's other places that do lens replacement:

http://www.replacementlenslabs.com

http://www.18004glasses.com

http://www.eyeglasses.com/lenses/

http://www.wohloptics.com

http://www.prescription-lenses.com/

http://www.eyeglassestogo.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?key=ACC_REPL&preadd=action

I haven't patronized any of the above. If I was forced at gunpoint by paramilitary squirrels to bet my life on one of the above, I'd go with Eyeglasses.com.

You'll most likely need a passable forged prescription on paper. Your old prescription, a scanner, image manipulation software (Paintshop Pro), and a laser printer can solve that.

It's not unusual to find that local opticians have equally reasonable prices on replacement lenses, at least if you have the willpower to just say no to all the options (AR, scratch insurance, Xenon anti-UFO-abduction coating).

Mnyclp 25 Aug 2004, 01:19

Brian-16: it was about 2 weeks for me to receive most of them, sometimes 2 or 3. it is by registered mail. i had to sign for all of them. Once i wasn't home, found the card left by the post man went to the post office didn't have i.d. with me, so had to go all the way back home, then go back, that was a hassle but well worth it......

Julian 24 Aug 2004, 23:46

I was looking at the Glassesdirect site last night and they say they don't do progresives. I thought when I checked them our last week it was £5 extra for bifocals and £10 for progressives. Am I right about this or am I imagining things?

Love and kisses, Jules.

CircleBox 24 Aug 2004, 23:11

Should I send my glasses in to Optical4less with my old lenses? I want my old lenses to be sent back, do I need to let them know. Also the form that they had me print, do I send that in with my glasses?

Brian-16 24 Aug 2004, 06:35

JJ

Thanks.I assume the two weeks is from the time you placed the order till they arrived.Did they come in the regular mail? Did you have to sign for the package?

JJ 23 Aug 2004, 21:07

I live in the Northeast and it took about two weeks to receive specs from Optical4Less. You can check online the progress of your order and the date they ship the order.

Brian-16 23 Aug 2004, 14:58

Mnyclp-

How long does it take for shipping? USA

Mnyclp 23 Aug 2004, 14:42

Circle: I have ordered many times from O4L and have been more than pleased with each and every pair. You don't need to verify a script from a doc, that's what's so perfect about them..

Smudgeur 23 Aug 2004, 14:40

I've had 2 pairs from optical 4 less. Both rimless both arrived in the UK from Hong Kong in perfect condition. I can recommend them. they don't require a dr's name so order any prescription you like

CircleBox 23 Aug 2004, 12:58

I went to Optical4less.com and I was wondering if anyone else has ordered from them and if so, did you get the glasses back in good shape, I am kind of nervous about ordering from them but it would only be about $50 total. Also I didn't see anywhere where it asks for the name of your doctor, is that not a requirement? That would make it so much easier. I mainly wanted to make sure others have ordered from this site and have gotten their glasses back. Please let me know asap. Thanks.

CircleBox 22 Aug 2004, 22:09

I have a boring RX of +.75 in the left eye and +.25 in the right eye but I love to wear glasses. My eyes can stand strong RX's but anything past -7 I can't focus well. I really want lenses around -2 or -3. Is there anywhere that I can safely send my frames to get these lenses put in without and RX from the doc and be assured that my glasses will come back to me? I get embarrased enough going there knowing that I could live without glasses but I want thicker lenses. If there is anyone who could help me, please do! Thank you!!!

D-W-V 21 Aug 2004, 16:18

And it's a very reasonable 5 pounds more for bifocals (unlike some other retailers).

Smudgeur 21 Aug 2004, 04:00

For UK correspondants, I have come across this site:

http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/

They sell glasses (without prescription) for only £15 (rimless for £25) including P&P. Sounds a terrific deal - anyone had any experience of them?

I ordered a couple of pairs from www.ruok4specs.co.uk recently - one single vision and one bifocals. Excellent quality and price - highly recommended.

Helen 21 Aug 2004, 02:06

Monica,

I am 35 and have had my eyes tested by two different optometrists in the last 8 months.

In December, an optom. examined my eyes and told me that I would definitely need bifocals or varifocals soon. I have a mild rx for distance as well.

So, in April I got a pair of executive bifocals. Wore them for a bit, but then came to the decision that I could do just as well without them. I need the distance specs for television, reading airport arrivals/departure boards, theatre, but close and intermediate distances are fine. Wearing specs simply makes everything clearer. I am not bothered too greatly by astigmatism.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to a different optometrist. Both my distance rx and reading add have gone up slightly. However, the optom. said that it would not be worth me getting bifocals or varifocals. I'd have my distance rx specs and just buy a pair of readers. The add is the same for both eyes 1.25.

On the day I picked up my spectacles, I also bought myself a pair of Foster Grant readers. I like the style of these rimless ones.

Anyway, Monica, good luck.

Ree 20 Aug 2004, 10:35

Monica.

It depends on how old you are. And have you been advised reading glasses by an optician or a ophthalmologist. Thats the ideal way.

If you need corection for simple presbyopia,, then most of the ready made available readers are ok,, anything other than that you need to get it tailor made for yourself.

Filthy McNasty 20 Aug 2004, 08:37

If you can read easily through 'em, and your eyes don't feel misaligned when you put them on, and all you need is a presbyopic reading correction, there is no harm done. If you need a hyperopic Rx (that is, if you need them to see clearly at all distances), then see an optometrist - they like to call themselves "doctors" - or an ophthalmologist (they really are doctors).

My optometrist is very good, technically speaking, if a bit of a doorknob socially; she diagnosed very small retinal perforations in my wife's eyes. The specialist who repaired them said that it was surprising, given the exquisite size and location of the perforations, that an optom was doing cycloplegic examinations that thoroughly.

Monica  20 Aug 2004, 07:14

I tried to join that board to ask a related question, having read their whole thread, but the e-mail still hasn't come. Maybe they don't want non-professionals on the board. So I'll ask here. Are reading glasses that are cheap no good? I don't mean the $1 jobs, but the $30 pairs they sell ready-made online and in department stores? They look quite good quality, and some are made by names I've heard of like Foster Grant. How do they compare quality-wise? We were quoted for a proper pair: $25 for frames, $50 for lenses, $80 for dispensings (these are Canadian $$) so a total of $155, which is lot more. Just trying to decide what to do.

D-W-V 19 Aug 2004, 16:10

Of course, these "Eye Care Professionals" are willing to buy lenses from places like Ce-Tru http://www.ce-tru.com/ (frames, case and lenses for $4.95).

royboy 22 Jul 2004, 22:35

hey guys another great source is 'circlemaster':

he is a great resource for ordering discounted contact lenses of any strength and type --- with no md script. just write him at circle@apci.net and give him the details, he is very prompt in responding w/prices etc --- he was even able to get me 'softperm' lenses very reasonably, this is usually an expensive lense [hybrid combo hard w/soft skirt to correct severe astigmatism comfortably]. u can mention that u heard about him from royboy at eyescene and i recommend him.

girnur 19 Jul 2004, 05:57

I ordered from them and there wasn´t any problems at all. I´d say go for it. :)

Perplexed 17 Jul 2004, 01:23

Has anyone have any experience with www.coastalcontacts.com? They don't ask for an eye doctor's RX.

Henry_c 13 Jul 2004, 11:13

Guido:

Both 1.67 and 1.8 are available in that Rx. You can write to them at admin@optical4less.com

They answered really quick when I did that.

Guido 13 Jul 2004, 10:07

Was planning on ordering glasses from "Optcal4less" (forum sponsor) in the -12 range. When I got to the point of choosing lenses, none of the available lenses offered that range. The front page identifies them as being experts in extreme prescriptions. Did I miss something on the website? I could not find a "contact us" page for e-mail query.

johnnyb555 12 Jul 2004, 10:20

I ordered a pair of +9's rimless from Zenni, took only about a week to receive, but I'm in LA. Beautiful pair, very nice lenses.

J.

Henry_c 30 Jun 2004, 12:07

I ordered a pair of rimless eyeglasses from O4Less. It took 2 weeks too get them which is OK. Quite happy with the fit and quality.

I was hesitant to order. The reason is that I have an unbalanced RX and that

require a little bit of extra work to look good. O4Less answered my emails and when I finally ordered they did a great job in hiding the RX diff.

Locally it took 4 attemps to get it done reasonably well. I was angry at them to say the least.

Fan of Optical4less 20 Jun 2004, 03:14

iGlass ,

A pair of -14 s with superhigh index in optical4less only $117

($29 frame and $88 lens)

Its way cheaper than what you bought in HongKong .

So far Optical4less is unbeatable .

iGlass 19 Jun 2004, 00:21

Guest, I made my comments in the interest of free market economy and healthy competition. I hope many more Hong Kong Opticians will come to sell online, and undercut Optical4Less.

guest 18 Jun 2004, 20:31

iGLASS,

Interesting thought. 1,000 HKD = $128 USD.

I suppose "good value" is relative. I can't afford to travel to Hong Kong to buy a pair of glasses, so anytime I can get -14s for $200 may be a good deal. My local frame-n-lens price is $250...

g.

iGLASS 18 Jun 2004, 14:37

I recently visited Hong Kong, home of Optical4less. I managed to purchase a pair of Hi-index -14's for HK$1000, with a decent frame. Is Optical4Less giving good value?

matt 16 Jun 2004, 06:38

Ordered rimless $19 glasses from Zenni Optical two weeks ago. Glasses arrived yesterday. The frames are a little more translucent than I thought they would be (the picture on their site now shows this much more clearly than the picture they had two weeks ago) and they feel sort of "cheap". For $19 that's not a complaint so much as an observation. The lens prescription is perfect, they fit well and my friends like the way they look. Definitely worth the money.

Mom to High Plus 09 Jun 2004, 17:32

Hi, just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with online retailers for children's eyeglasses. My daughter is going for a check up tomorrow and she really needs new glasses (have been waiting to see what her new script is...). They run me $200 (optical shop) or $100ish (at Walmart with the sunglass clips)...so may try to online order her a pair. She is probably in the plus 7s (both eyes).

thanks in advance

NO More Zenni ! 09 Jun 2004, 11:51

I ordered from zenni last month and I m really disappointed . The frame is poor quality and the lenses are scratched . Emailed them again and again and I never get reply . No more zenni please .

blueridgetraveler 08 Jun 2004, 07:32

Have only just tried online - Zennioptical(<$30)for a backup pair, after latest WalMart ($200)pair. Liked them so much I got a second pair. Had a problem (my fault)and they replaced nocharge. Don't expect an email response, just phone them if you have a problem.

Dr.S. 08 Jun 2004, 04:51

For those who like their glasses thick, here is another idea. There is a new online retailer located in Missouri USA www.safevision.net that offers industrial safety glasses for online purchase. They just quoted me $150 for a pair with -16.50 prescription. Remember that industrial lenses have to be made with a minimum 3 mm center thickness so the edges will be noticeably thicker than usual. They normally use polycarbonate lenses but will apparently provide other materials such as CR39 upon request. I have not ordered anything yet

WB 29 May 2004, 07:18

I guess the reason I have not ordered from Optical4less is because while I like their selection of frames they tack on an extra $59 for higher astigmatism corrections. I have to say that the glasses that I've purchased from the online retailers have been far superior to the ones I've gotten from my long-time optician, and I'm sitting right in front of him. If we could get O4L to drop that additional cost for the high cylinder I'd buy from them in a minute!

Bwian 29 May 2004, 05:50

I received my -15 specs from optical 4 less last month and i have never been happier with their product. Delivery to Australia was about 2 weeks but was well worth waiting for.

LongTimeLurker 29 May 2004, 03:11

After 10+ years at my current prescription of OS -12.00 -0.75 and OD -9.5 -0.75, I have just recieved what is undoubtedly the best fitting pair of glasses I have ever owned from, you guessed it, www.optical4less.com

How do you know this is not false propaganda, of the type viewable on O4L's website? That's an easy one.....all my grammar is correct.

Booza 27 May 2004, 07:10

I agree with " an old friend"

www.optical4less.com are the best. I have ordered three pairs of glasses from them and I have been rapt with them all.

Use the professionals.

An Old Friend . 25 May 2004, 05:14

A couple question for josph A and some other Eyesceners that are interesting in this :

$173 US for a pair of single vision is just a normal price in most countries . Isn't it ? I don't think it is expensive .

Also , can you find any other stores to make -9 flat-top bifocals (especially with low index material) ? May be you can , but how much is it ? Can someone figure out the price ?

I dare to say http://Optical4less.com has the BEST price and product quality amoung all internet glasses shops .

At least , They are a responsible company .

Thanks .

D-W-V 24 May 2004, 17:00

Free Glasses! If you're from a country that Myeyeglasses.net hasn't shipped to before, they'll make your glasses for free:

http://myeyeglasses.net/testimonial.htm

WB 23 May 2004, 11:03

Try eyeglassfactoryoutlet.com for the trifocals. I've gotten several pair of glasses from them; executive bifocals, ft35's, single vision, and they do a fantastic job. Relatively quick (usually under two weeks), good frame selection (if you like plastic) at very reasonable prices. Can also go to the section where the frames are trendier, but also a little more expensive. If I'm not mistaken, you can do the Executive trifocals there too. Hope it works out-

D-W-V 23 May 2004, 04:08

This place has pricing for all kinds of lenses, including the elusive executive trifocal:

http://www.eye-doctor.com/surface.htm

Joseph A. 22 May 2004, 09:39

Another letter:

Optical 4 Less CAN make a regular 35mm flat-top bi-focal, but the cost will be $173! As if that weren't enough, I was told that it would take "at least 1.5 monthes [sic] to make."

Apparently even a pair of 'klunkers' can get expensive.

---Joe

Smudgeur 22 May 2004, 07:23

I've just received my glasses from optical4less. they are superb quality and a superb price. No hassles at all. Although mine is not a complicated prescription - shortsighted with a bit of astigmatism.

D-W-V 21 May 2004, 23:29

There's online sources for replacement lenses, including trifocals, such as: http://www.wohloptics.com/orderform.html, http://www.eyeglasses.com, http://www.replacementlenslabs.com, http://www.8004glasses.com.

I haven't ordered from any of them.

Have you tried all your friendly local opticians? Some stores have very reasonable rates for replacement lenses, even if they have obscene mark-ups on complete glasses.

Joseph A. 21 May 2004, 22:59

I'm having a time dealing with Optical 4 Less:

All I asked for was a pair of lenses in my prescription, OD -8 x -0.25 @ 15, Prism 1 Base In, OS -9 x -0.25 @ 15, with a +2/+3 executive tri-focal, made in the lowest possible index, with no rolling or polishing of the edges, in a frame that I supply.

Later, our old friend, Albert, sent me letter saying that they cannot make executive tri-focals.

I asked if they could make a regular 35mm flat-top tri-focal, and I just received another letter saying that they cannot make tri-focals altogether.

I just replied, asking if they could make a regular flat-top 35mm +3 bifocal.

I'm afraid I'm about to receive another letter saying that they can only make invisible multi-focals, and I just can't wear those; instant headache!

I already have a pair of expensive glasses that look good, but I can't see hardly anything with them; the edges are rolled back so far, I only hace a little peep-hole to look through in the center of the already tiny frame, and, because they are made of super high index glass, the colour abberation is absoulutely horrendous.

But now I want a pair of glasses that I can see good with, but might not look so good, but with the way Albert is whittling me down on choices, I may end up with another pair of expensive, good looking, glasses that I can't see out of!

You might wonder why I have bothered to tell you all this.

Just remember, you can't be too choosy when you're trying to get something cheaply.

---Joe

Hubie 20 May 2004, 18:27

I ordered a pair of medium plus Rx bifocal specs from Zenni Optical back in October. There was some delay in completing my order on Zenni's part.

A lens type was out of stock, and I had to call the firm twice. I ended up having to change my order and buy a less expensive product.

I finally got my glasses 4 weeks later. It then took Zenni 3 more weeks to issue me a credit (They had initially charged the entire amount to my credit card).

The pair of glasses which Zenni delivered to me however were fine.

zenni experience 20 May 2004, 11:39

I have ordered 3 pairs from zenni. I got them all, and they were all OK, though there was a small lens-quality problem with the right lens in one of them. So it's not totally a "scam", though that doesn't mean you won't have problems with them.

Gremlin 20 May 2004, 08:11

I'd like to note a very favorable experience with Optical4Less.

I had an old pair of minus 3.25 Rx prescription sunglasses with bifocal add. The frames were old, damaged and broken. After checking with O4L by email, I mailed in the two lenses.

For just $29 plus $8 shipping, O4L cleaned, slightly reground, and put the lenses in new frames. I received the new glasses back in less than two weeks.

The finished product is excellent. The same service here locally in Eastern USA would have cost me over a hundred bucks.

Just say no to Zenni 20 May 2004, 03:53

Yes on 3/10/04, I ordered a pair. I have not recieved them and no replyies to my e-mails. I am worried about giving them my credit card number since they are in China. It might be a scam!!!

Beware

Marie 11 May 2004, 20:50

Has anybody ordered glasses from http://zennioptical.com?

TC 10 May 2004, 08:44

Just another "Online Retailers" report:

A co-worker came in and was discussing his vision again. So his desire was to get a pair of glasses that only corrected the astigmatism and left the nearsighted correction out completely so he could do near work easier (he didn't want just bifocals)

He used http://www.39dollarglasses.com/ filled out the order form with the Rx he wanted, he dropped in his own last name under the doctor field and submitted the order. Ordered on a Monday they were at the post office the following Saturday... nice turnaround! I didn't use the site sponsor because I assumed shipping would take longer coming from out of the country.

ted 05 May 2004, 06:05

also received my order yesterday after 13 days of waiting. Take some time grab a ruler and order for yourself. 47$ U S is 3 times cheaper than most regular retailers here north of the 49th. I was a little hesitant at first but would recommend to anyone.

Take care.

Wendy 29 Apr 2004, 06:18

I have just received my order from our sponsor, Optical 4 Less. The glasses are perfect. I am sooooo impressed. From ordering to me receiving them took 12 days.

I got my eyes tested 3 months ago and couldn't afford to get the prescription made up. It was going to cost me $230.00 here in Australia. My bill from O4L? $47.00.

I would recommend them to anyone.

Take my advice, get your eyes tested, grab your prescription and order from these guys, save yourselves a stack.

Obviously, them being a sponsor of this site tells you something.

Keep up the good work O4L.

Did Coastal Contacts require a prescription or doctor's phone number? How did you find their prices? Thank You.

Just thought i would say how impressed i am with www.coastalcontacts.com I live in outback Australia and i ordered some contacts last week from Coastal Contacts in Vancouver. The order was placed on Thursday and i received them here in Australia on Tuesday morning. I cannot get that service here in Australia. Well done Coastal Contacts

Tod: Each to their own! We could do with quite a few short movies of our favorite things here. After all, this is OUR porn, and everything else seems to be covered these days, if you know what I mean. Glasses fetish, to me, is positively vanilla compared to some things I've come across, but think we're weird. Go figure. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. Oh, I'm good today.............

Tod 17 Apr 2004, 15:39

Electra thats funny but true "Sears is expensive and trashy". I like putting in contact lenses. Someone here should make a mpeg movie showing a cute girl putting in contacts and taking them out and then putting on strong glasses.

Todd: Contacts gross me out too, I'd rather watch surgery.

Electra 16 Apr 2004, 07:05

I wouldn't ever buy anything in Sears again, let alone glasses. Their after-sales service is the pits. I should have learned sooner, after two electrical items and several tools (that broke), but I finally clued in. There are expensive stores, and there are trashy stores, but Sears is expensive trash. To get back on topic, I've heard/read so many complaints about their optical service it's amazing they stay in business.

guest 15 Apr 2004, 17:35

Has anyone ordered contact lenses from O4L yet? Did they require a Rx or doctor's phone number?

Trent 15 Apr 2004, 17:02

My last glasses were ordered through Sears. I ordered flat top bifocals in an -9.5 Rx. They took a month to come in, when I got them the lab had done them in hi-index. Too bad because I wanted the edge thickness.

Tod 15 Apr 2004, 10:03

Sears is fine IF you are going there to by some socket wrenches or underwear. But to keep your eyes in their sockets, avoid Sears eyewear.

My ex girlfriend bought her glasses there because she is cheap. pair of nice semi-rimless complete for $100.00 She has an Rx for astigmatism and uses them only for the computer.. if at all. I tried without success once to get her to wear them full time after she said she couldn't read the credits during the end of a movie on TV and had to get up to see better. VANITY! She is going to school to become a nurse but she got squemish when seeing me put in contact lenses. Go figure!

Dr.S. 15 Apr 2004, 07:46

This isn't online but maybe relevant. On a recent business trip to Chicago, I took along a new pair of frames and a carefully made script (for a "cousin") for approx -17 lenses preferably in CR39. I dropped in at a store of the For Eyes chain, and after we got throught the usual back-and-forth about why high index lenses wouldn't do, the representative said that this prescription would be "very thick" if done in CR39 but would be no problem for their lab, and would cost only $44 to fill! I would have made an order there and then, except that my trip was too short. Later, I also visited the Sears store in downtown Chicago, where I asked several questions about what they could do for a very nearsighted relative - I was able to have a look at the lens options pages while the rep was flipping through the book, and I noticed that the highest prescription that they were able to fill in CR39 was -16.75 (at about twice the price charged by For Eyes for the same lenses).

The other Johnny 15 Apr 2004, 06:54

SEARS SUCKS...

I wanted to update everyone on my Sears experience from last December. I called after three weeks because I didn't hear back about my glasses, all the lady said was "oh yeah... they're here".

I received the insurance EOB form for the exam four months later, and the date was wrong... dated 1/2004 instead of 12/2003, so I'm losing a year of coverage. I called Sears Optical, they said that billing is done by their corporate offices, they didn't have a contact number or a name, and were not willing to call (date of eyeglasses purchase was 12/03 though... seems they think that they first sell the glasses, and then do an exam). I called my insurance company which corrected Sears' error and even told me that they've had many complaints about Sears. I hope Sears is removed from the authorized providers list...

Trent 25 Mar 2004, 18:52

Dr.S

I agree with you. I ordered CR-39 through Sears in a -9.5 power. It took them a month to come in and when they did they were done in hi-index. High Rx plastic blanks must be getting hard to find.

Dr.S. 25 Mar 2004, 09:54

CR39 lenses in high minus powers are getting harder to obtain. In approaching online retailers, I usually start by asking if they can put new CR39 lenses in an existing pair of glasses for a prescription of about -16.50~-17. Most places just say no, but the following may be of interest. I have not ordered from any of them yet. Wohloptics recently verbally quoted $120 for replacement lenses. 39dollarglasses quoted $99 last summer. Nationaleyewearoutlet (a year ago) quoted $85 for replacement CR39 lenses of "any" power including the above range. Also, a year ago, eyeglassesinternational quoted me $75 for CR39 lenses (-16.50) in new glasses. For your info.

Electra 25 Mar 2004, 06:48

Filthy, you crack me up:) A Jehovah's Witness once told me there are no glasses in heaven. Sure doesn't sound like heaven to me.

Johnnyb555 25 Mar 2004, 05:56

Brian,

I'll vouch for Leo at Globallens, http://www.globallens.com. He's never let me down, and good prices too.

Johnny.

gwgs 24 Mar 2004, 05:09

A bit disappointing by the looks of it;

They only go to -6.00 and +4.00

A very limited selection of frames as well

Yeah - everyone going to hell please bring a clean box of contacts so we can try each others' GOC combos.

Also, any good looking GWGs - please come prepared to play hard, OK?

NJ 22 Mar 2004, 13:50

Well, it will be great to meet everyone, after all these years. We should have a real 'hot' time!!

Filthy McNasty 22 Mar 2004, 09:37

NeuroJoe: Yes, you are going to hell. Bobby is going to hell. The GOC community is going to hell.

See you all there.

as links: http://www.eyeglassesinternational.com

http://www.globallens.com

sorry about that.

NeuroJoe 22 Mar 2004, 00:45

Brian, for contacts try Leo at Globallens: www.globallens.com

For glasses, try Melissa at Eyeglasses International: www.eyeglassesinternational.com

I routinely buy from both, and never have to fax a copy of my Rx.

Filthy, if your moral and ethical teachings are true, I am going straight to Hell. And I'm not even a Christian! Then again, I am a doctor, so my Rx is technically written by a doc. However, I never use my name as the prescribing physician.

Filthy McNasty 21 Mar 2004, 20:15

Since all you need to fake a presciption is your base curve, the diameter of the lens, and the spherical power of the lens in question, it would be very easy to fall into the EVIL and COMPLETELY EFFECTIVE practice of faking prescriptions. One can get one's base curve by going to an optician and asking to be fitted for plano colored contacts. Of course, it would be highly not nice and very BAD of you to use the information you obtain (probably for free) from the optician for the purposes of faking a presciption.

Filthy McNasty 21 Mar 2004, 20:11

It would be inappropriate to fake a prescription. Very inappropriate. I do not advocate faking a prescription, because although it would undoubtedly be effective (as these online places merely want to cover their asses), it would be morally reprehensible, corrupt, and just plain BAD to fake a prescrition that would get you exactly what you want and never be checked. Do not fake a prescription, whatever you do.

gocgirl 21 Mar 2004, 20:02

Brian, I was wondering the same thing! I definately want to try GOC but am not having any success what so ever to find anywhere to allow this.

Brian 21 Mar 2004, 16:37

I posted back in August 2003 about Vision Direct now requiring a doctors prescription to order contacts online, well I was actually able to order them still through the site for a few months afterwards.. I just tried to order again today and they are now requiring prescriptions and I've tried a few other contact lenses sites i've found through google and they require a doctors prescription as well.. I know a lot of you out there do the GOC thing.. How do you get your contacts? Are there still any sites around where you don't get a doctors prescription to get contacts online? Thanks..

Any online places to order contacts without faxing an rx?

James 05 Mar 2004, 12:59

What experience do any UK folk have of customs duty and VAT being charged by the Post Office on goods imported from outside the EU? I am told that, in theory at least, this is payable on all goods over £18 in value?

Many Eyescene guys (and me ) had good experience with Optical4less.com .

They never let us down . 80)

Henry_c 03 Mar 2004, 07:39

Beam:

I have looked at Optical4Less and was actually considering to order from them. What is your experience of them?

Beam 03 Mar 2004, 05:59

Henry_c & A Guest ,

Here is your suggestion :

http://optical4less.com

They will fix your problem and with no extra :)

Electra 02 Mar 2004, 08:43

I think also we as a society have been trained to be polite and it makes us a bit malleable instead of demanding what we want (that we pay for!). That's why threads like this help - it gives ordinary people the correct technical terms to use to be able to say "I want THIS". It's a simple enough request, after all.

---- 02 Mar 2004, 08:29

the reality is that i bet some of the online retailers are the same ones the optical shops get their products from (It's not some guy in the basement grinding your lens all week)

Maybe the success rate is better ordering online because it cuts out a (lack of) communication node

Henry_c 02 Mar 2004, 07:02

A Guest:

My Rx is unbalanced (L plano, R -3) so I have dealt with this before. At best I have been able to get them to do a decent job.

They often recommend CR39 + Hi-index and that seems to be adequate most times. Rimless is an exception however. Recently I gave up after sending back the a rimless pair 3 times.

Next time I will most likely order online and see if they are willing to deal with this.

A guest 01 Mar 2004, 17:03

Henry_c

Do you have a similar situation?

A Guest 01 Mar 2004, 17:03

Henry_c

The timing of your response couldn't be better, as I just returned from the opticians a couple of hours ago- I was picking up my STILL unbalanced glasses. Good luck was right; they never did figure it out. Rather than try yet again I gave up, and I'll wear them as is. The funny part of it all is that the $19 glasses DO have lenses that match; they totally thickened the one to match the other. It appears that being there in person, having left the glasses with the optician several times AND paying a lot of money didn't have any effect on them matching the thicknesses of the lenses. I'm not a pain in the rear usually, but obviously this is something I've dealt with my whole life so I know that it IS possible and I know that having one thick lens and one thin one really bothers me, as it is very very noticable. I don't want to jinx the inexpensive glasses however, because I'm hoping that they can recreate the magic again in the future.

Henry_c 01 Mar 2004, 14:22

A Guest:

Good luck trying to get opticians to match lens thickness. I have tried and it seems they don't want to do it. If a place that charges 20-40$ don't want to do it that's fine but when we talk about 200$ and up. I even said I was willing to pay extra. It was like I spoke a foreign language.

Electra 01 Mar 2004, 12:26

What's the latest on companies who will sell contacts on-line without checking the prescription is genuine? (For GOC etc).

I'm trying to list some recommended places on my website, and would appreciate your comments!

A Guest 01 Mar 2004, 11:13

I may be the strange one here but as I stated before, I've been very satisfied with each pair of glasses I've ordered from Zenni. The most interesting thing is that I am very exacting in that I can really notice if my cylinder is slightly askew, or as noted previously, if one lens ends up being significantly thicker than the other. I've gone round and round IN PERSON with the opticians to no avail but somehow managed to get someone on the other end of this computer to actually understand my requests and make my glasses look decent. Of course, there is always that inability to try on frames so it is a shot in the dark as far as that's concerned, but at $19 or $29 or $49 a pair, you can have a couple of pair on hand to choose from. Goodness knows I've spent close to $400 on one pair in the past, and I can't really say I love them more than my cheapos. Just my thoughts......

Russell 29 Feb 2004, 08:20

Apparently, they are placing the bifocal at a generic point. And many people here are claiming they are totally happy with them. So all those measurements the in-person optician takes must not be entirely necessary. Perhaps another reason to jack up the price of progressives?

??? 28 Feb 2004, 20:25

How can an online retailer possibly fill an order for progressives?

Do they actually work?

A Guest 28 Feb 2004, 15:06

I recently received glasses that I ordered from Zenni and I'm very pleased with them. Negating the fact that it's the first time I am trying lined bifocals (previously wearing just progressives, but the distortions and smaller reading areas just too much effort)and they're taking some getting used to, they did a great job with the bifocals and with a pair of single vision sun glasses. Which is interesting considering I just returned my glasses to my regular optician for the FOURTH time because they're still not right, and the lenses alone, in my own frame, cost more than both from Zenni combined, including the shipping! I have an unbalanced Rx between my two eyes and they managed to make one lens thicker to match the other in both pair of glasses, as well as in two I've purchased from them in the past. The guy at my opticians office can't seem to do the same thing, and he has the frames in his hand and supposedly even sent them to the lab. SUffice it to say, I like Zenni. Now if only they made executive bifocals or trifocals.....

dovesong 27 Feb 2004, 15:09

Update on my earlier post...Feb. 27th I finally received my glasses from Zenni. I ordered them on Jan. 9th. They fit well and the perscription is good. I have never been burned by ordering things online but this time I was worried. All worked out well. Just be aware it may take more than the advertized two weeks. My order was for a progressive lens.

Four yeux 23 Feb 2004, 12:25

Phoroptor

How does one specify vertex distance?

Thanks.

Brett 23 Feb 2004, 05:14

Thanks Albert, very kind

Anna_P 22 Feb 2004, 15:31

Someone hornorable from our favorite online store gave me this and I think I should share with you guys here .

optical4less.com coupons code : anna@eyescene

Its a 6% off discount and I got this not easy . Please enjoy .

mickey 19 Feb 2004, 18:47

dovesong,

I ordered twice from them.Fortunately I had only good experiences.Last time the glasses were here in CA in an incredible 5 days.Hope you'll get'em soon.

Phoroptor 19 Feb 2004, 15:20

Mark:

It has nothing to do with the optical center height.

Four Yeux:

You will need to specify a vertex distance. Because you have such a high Rx even 1 mm of changing the distance from the back surface of the lens to your eye will result in a power change.

dovesong 19 Feb 2004, 12:16

Ordered glasses from Zenni Optical on January 9th. Still no glasses but they have charged to my charge card. Everyweek the say "they will ship on Monday". Still waiting. Anyone else having this trouble?

Mark 12 Feb 2004, 23:22

Four Yeux ,

Its because of your wearing habit . Normally optometrists will place the focus in the middle of the lenses .

So if you wear your glasses down to your nose you should tell them about this . So they will place the focus a bit higher than usual . You can well use the 'Remark' field while you order from http://optical4less.com .

Hope this info help .

Mark

Four Yeux 12 Feb 2004, 12:04

I recevied my glasses from optical4less today. The frame is ok and the lenses are fitted perfectly. However even though I gave the correct prescription ( -18.50 by-.75 left and -17.50 by -.75 right )Ikeep pushing the frame towards my eyes to get better vision.Anybody have similar problems?

Parangon 12 Feb 2004, 10:19

Zenni Optical do ship internationaly. Same shipping fees. Confirmation after a phone call: 415-785-7003. My order should arrive in about two weeks. Will come back for more informations.

Another site: Specs4less. Not bad for transitional lenses. Not much choice for lenses shape or size; no titanium frames. Optical4less do have more options but you need to contact them prior to order. Like for frame color. Myeyeglasses.net is another site to look at if you need more than 1 pair, for you and a friend perhaps.

Spexman 12 Feb 2004, 09:31

Hmmm one interesting thing I did a couple of weeks ago..I was on a sale in a opt shop bought a nice frame (clear plastic from Robert Larosche for 1/4 of ord price)

But whats interesting I asked them how much it cost for an examination in the autorefractor. I was told they didn´t charge anything for that so I was tested and got my note.

What was now on this note it was a very fine machine I could see that BUT !!

It was not only writing out the schript it also contained the value for contact lenses (BC) and also the PD. I don´t know how good this machines do their job but as they cost around 14.000 usd I guess they are rather good. So that can be good advise for you out there who is interesting in GOC:ing

In this way you get the right PD which is important, and also you know which CL to choose. When I say this the cl:s I´m thinking of is 1-day-monthly which is very thinn and can´t harm much if they´re wrong, opticians even sell them to people who should have lenses with cyl, but they play with the amounts and sell for example acuvue just to be cheap. Enuf for now...

Russell 12 Feb 2004, 09:15

Alice...you don't need to fake a PD. Get a friend to help. Use a ruler with millimeters marked. You look straight ahead. Have your friend measure the distance between your pupils. If you don't want to involve someone else, you may be able to do this yourself by looking in a mirror. And zenni probably won't want verification. Certainly, Opitcal4Less doesn't care about verification.

Wolfgang 12 Feb 2004, 08:29

Paula, have you ever tried Lentis or Myodiscs? I think these glasses would be great with your Rx and would fit you very well...

Oscar 12 Feb 2004, 07:52

Paula - didn't you post a picture of your glasses somewhere a while ago? They looked really nice so don't despair!

Alice 12 Feb 2004, 07:38

How can you make a fake pupillary distance to order from the Zenni=optical. What would be an average pupilary distance and would that company want to know and eye dr. name to give them for verification? Thanks.

Paula 12 Feb 2004, 06:11

Thankyou all for the information. I half suspected what most of you have said is right. My doctor never said it couldn't be done but advised me against it. The contact would work but I have trouble with contacts. I guess I will have to put up with thick glasses.

InterestedinGOC 11 Feb 2004, 23:21

Hi, I am interested in GOC and was wondering where I could buy cheap glasses of around -8 or -9 online, without raising suspicion. I looked through several websites but it seems like everyone wants eye dr's contact information. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tammy 11 Feb 2004, 18:17

To the nameless one,

Thanks for the tip. I will think about it. By the way, i am picking out my new glasses tommorow. The place where i am going to takes about 2 weeks to get glasses done and back, so i should have my new glasses way before the end of this month.

 11 Feb 2004, 17:24

Tammy

If an optician won't do a rimless frame I know a jeweler can do it for you!

If your only looking for cheap budget frames,,,forget it!

Seriously a good jeweler could give you what you want at an average glasses price. And you would have a pair nobody else has, only limited by your imagination!

(jewelers or metalsmiths made glasses long before factories existed)

Don't give up your search!

Guest 11 Feb 2004, 15:39

Optical4Less's prices are creeping up!

Tammy 11 Feb 2004, 14:33

Lentifan, I don't know about Paula, but AFA i'm concerned, my experience has been that the opticians out and out told me that my prescription is too strong to put in a pair of rimless frames.

lentifan 11 Feb 2004, 13:30

Paula/Tammy, do the opticians say that -16 is physically too thick for rimless, or are they just reluctant or do not advise it? They may be thinking that you wont like the edge thickness, but if you make it clear you don't mind do you still get the 'can't do'?

guest 11 Feb 2004, 10:51

Try a private jeweler.

I've seen glasses that were made in art class/university.

oscar 11 Feb 2004, 10:32

1-day accuvues go up to minus 12.

Spexman 11 Feb 2004, 10:15

And it´s also possible to make rimless in hi index plastic but order them in europe and they will be rather thinn and nice looking.

Spexman 11 Feb 2004, 10:13

Proposal to you girls ;-)

Get the highest amount in acuvues I think it´s around minus 10 and the get the rest of the correction in a beutiful pair of rimless the you also maybe have solved the bifocal issue just lay them off !!

Tammy 11 Feb 2004, 09:42

Paula, don't feel bad. You are not the only one. I have my heart set on rimless too, but have been told that my prescription is too strong for rimless.

paula 11 Feb 2004, 03:50

I still have my heart on rimless but I suspect that -16.25 may be too thick for rimless. I have posted this before and received information back. most say no but I am looking for a differant opinion.

Zenni customer 11 Feb 2004, 02:23

This was a new site to me and recently just started to get a little feedback on here's my 2 cents.

Ordered more than (1) pair incl sunglasses.

Stainless steel is only for the ear portion on all. The frame i.e. is PLASTIC incl. between lenses and also the forward extention before hinge to ears. To specify , you have only the straight arm to your ear. Rest is crap, especially for the rimless variations.

Now when first arrived I DID NOT send back. Prescription -1 /-1.5 isn't bad but the lenses still took adjustment to get used to. The quality really just scared me. So first pair broke and ordered more.... why post. Because I'd like someone to deliver a non-fragile all metal eyeglass for cheap, the search continues. (3 eyeglasses) - 1 down treating rest like my $300 plus glasses

Wolfgang 09 Feb 2004, 00:41

Wonderful site of Zenni Optical, they really offer glasses up to -20 dpt, but unfortunately they will only ship within the USA.... :-(

Alan 05 Feb 2004, 07:24

Tammy - good, we're seeing the same thing. Yeah, I think the "Your Prescription" page is an old page they haven't updated.

Tammy 04 Feb 2004, 21:24

Alan, i tried Zenni Optical's website again, and when i accessed the prescription blanks on their front page, they did go up to -20.00. However, when i clicked on the "Your Prescription" button, and i tried to get my Rx then, then the Rx's only went up to -12.00. They must have a link to an old page there.

Alan 04 Feb 2004, 20:04

Tammy - why don't you try Zenni again and see if it's different. No one suspects you of lying or not telling the truth...in fact, now that I think about it, I seem to remember that Zenni's site used to only allow up to -12, but they changed it.

tortoise 04 Feb 2004, 18:17

Hi Tammy, I know that 39dollarglasses has those limits but I just checked zennioptical and their menu starts at -20 as I had remembered. I am far from an expert on the oddities of the internet but I feel quite suprised that you got different results.

http://www.zennioptical.com/product/5803.html

Tammy 04 Feb 2004, 18:08

I was filling in my information at those optical websites, including Zenni optical, and when i clicked on the box for the amount of sphere, it started at around +/-1 and it only showed the numbers for up to -12.00 diopters and after that, the top of the list said Plano. It's seeming like i'm the only person on here that it does that to, but you've got to try to understand what i mean, because i am telling the truth. I know what i saw on these optical websites.

Alan  04 Feb 2004, 15:39

Leon -- can you tell me about the glasses you've ordered from them? (Rx, frame shape, high-index or not, etc?)

Smudgeur 04 Feb 2004, 14:37

You can get bifocals for £39 at www.ruok4specs.co.uk

OOLad 04 Feb 2004, 14:12

I have used www.bargainspecs.com £59GBP for a pair of bifocals - bargain! just as the name says!

Leon 04 Feb 2004, 07:31

Myeyeglasses.net is just great. Superfast and excellent communication!

Alan 04 Feb 2004, 07:25

Anyone - Has anyone ordered from myeyeglasses.net ? There aren't lots of options, but for rimless it seems like it might be a good site. Curious about people's experiences.

Anna/Wolfgang -- my experience at O4L was similar: glasses very well made (though it took a very long time to get them).

Tammy - That's very odd about Zenni. What do you mean by "it's plano after that"? They will definitely make glasses as high as -16 (well, at least they did at one point and their web site currently allows up to -20 in the input fields). Take another look and let me know if it's the same; I'm confused.

Wolfgang 04 Feb 2004, 04:39

Anna, which rx do you have? Recently I bought from optical4less a pair of -23. They are really well done and cheap. I can highly recommend them for high prescriptions.

Wolfgang

Tammy 03 Feb 2004, 14:53

Alan, i have tried to order glasses from Zenni Optical, as well as 39dollarglasses, and both times when i went to put in my prescription, i have found that the sphere on those sites only goes up to -12.00 and then it is plano after that.

Alan 03 Feb 2004, 05:50

Tammy -- I don't understand; who didn't have your prescription? I'm pretty sure Zenni will do glasses around -15; that's where you are, right?

Tammy 28 Jan 2004, 21:50

I checked out both 39 dollar glasses and optical4less, and found out that while they both seem to have high quality glasses, O4L is a bit pricey and it seems that i have a bit of a problem with 39 dollar glasses. They only do prescriptions as high as -12.50. Oh well, i tried and i will try again someplace else.

leelee 28 Jan 2004, 07:38

they are called Optx 20/20 Reading Lenses. It looks like there are lots of places to but them on the web and I've also seen them in the drug store - it was a Brooks Pharmacy I think.

Eye Tri 28 Jan 2004, 03:59

Lucy,

I've bought a few pairs of glasses with CR39 lenses from eyeglassfactoryoutlet.com. They seem like reasonable people to work with.

lucy 27 Jan 2004, 16:11

I am another of the "lurkers" to this area, where I enjoy reading all of the postings but have not ever submitted one myself. That being said, does anyone know which online retailers use the regular thicker CR39 lenses for eyeglasses? I see that several offer nice thin lenses, but I rather prefer the regular thick lenses. I have been satisfied with the glasses I have ordered from Zenni, but they make them in the thin lenses and I like them to be a bit bulkier. My prescription isn't too exciting according to the standards here- some serious astigmatism, a mild myopic correction and a rapid progression of needing more and more of an add. Thank you to anyone who offers up some suggestions.

tortoise 27 Jan 2004, 12:00

I just found an online retailer which is new to me.

http://www.glassesonweb.com/

They are not cheap but have a good selection of designer frames and their drag-down menu for Rx goes from -20 to +10.

Anyone tried them?

henry VIII 27 Jan 2004, 10:08

I'm trying to buy stick-on (self-adhesive) bifocal lenses.

I've seen them on the internet once - and being stupid, i didn't write down the url.

also, any ideas about stick on prism lenses (the fresnel lens)???

Many thanks

I'm so stupid

D'Oh

Jerry 27 Jan 2004, 04:14

Hey Mantha, your style is typical of an O4L spokesperson.

I must say I agree with you though.

Albert, why don't you post to this site as yourself, it would be great to be able to ask an optical manufacturer, like yourself, questions.

guest 27 Jan 2004, 01:46

I'm wondering if any of those online retailers would do buisness through a money order as i don't have a credit card?

And if i did have a credit card i wouldn't anyway.

lazysiow 24 Jan 2004, 11:28

having ordered from both 39dollarglasses.com and specs4less.com, I'd have to say both are amazing value and quality. specs4less in my case had better lens quality than 39dollarglasses but not to say that the latter is bad at all

D-W-v 24 Jan 2004, 01:47

I also ordered from RU0K4SPECS a couple of years ago. It's about the only online retailer that offers the R38 round segment bifocal, which seems to be virtually unobtainable in North America.

-5 24 Jan 2004, 01:00

I used ruok4specs last year, excellent serveice and very good prices for the basic glasses. I paid 39GBP for a pair of bifocals. No prescription needed!!

Smudgeur 23 Jan 2004, 10:43

Has anyone bought from here:

Gremlin 22 Jan 2004, 11:13

I just received eyeglasses which I ordered from Zenni Optical. Very good quality lenses, well made, good service. My experience with Zenni's customer service was fine.

Brian-16 06 Jan 2004, 13:10

livingmanna-Do they have a toll free or toll line to call them? Glad you got your specs,finally-and you can see great?

livingmanna 06 Jan 2004, 09:13

Finally! I got my glasses from Zenni after 2.5 months. They work great. The guy called me up and apologized that there was a problem with the first time they ordered them and then they messed up the reordering. They said they are going to a new reordering process. I forgive them, I'm canceling my complaint, and I may order from them again.

FourYeux 05 Jan 2004, 12:40

I have looked at the site and was thinking of getting lenticulars but what is the difference between Plano Base and bi-concave.

The other Johnny 01 Jan 2004, 21:17

Hey Beta,

I just looked at optical 4 less, they have a $29 charge for UV coating.

Sears price I think was about the same, maybe $25, on top of the $8 for tinting just like this web site. Got to admit though, much less expensive frames on the site. Sears frames probably averaged $100 for similar designs.

The other Johnny 31 Dec 2003, 16:58

SEARS OPTICAL... what a nightmare!

(Not quite on-line retailer story, but this may be the most appropriate thread.)

Went into Sears Optical today. My appointment was at 12:30, arrived a few minutes early, filled out their form and chose a frame before the exam. Exam time was pretty much on target, around 12:40. Afterwards I waited almost an hour and a half while two assistants were chatting away with another customer and his family in Spanish, trying to sell the guy on more expensive frames, lenses, and even a year's supply of contact lenses because they have a $30 rebate. The Dr. left at 1:30 and even asked them about me. One assistant glanced over and told me that I'm next... (no sh*t... there was no one else in the store). Finally my turn, and guess what? I'm rushed out in five minutes. The woman didn't even want to call my insurance company at first when I told her that my insurance covers the more expensive frame and lenses (she finally called, and it was covered).

I ordered clear polycarb lenses (low rx of -.75, but she didn't want to sell me the standard plastic for some reason... these were full frames).

Does anyone know why they charge extra for UV coating even when you order a dark tint?

tortoise 20 Dec 2003, 20:53

Hi Trent, Wow, that kinda sends a message doesn't it? Open for (GOC) business.

By the way that frame might be a favourite for some GOCers but Not4me! 8-)

Trent 20 Dec 2003, 10:25

This frame is listed as "GOC Favorite"

I'm telling you we are keeping this guy in business!

http://optical4less.com/index.cgi?mode=loaditem&cat=pnormal&no=P37

tortoise 19 Dec 2003, 06:21

The link only goes to the top of the website.

I had to select frames etc. to get to the lens selection.

tortoise 19 Dec 2003, 06:11

Brille, the site keeps changing! I just went to the lens selection area and I found that -/+ 40 is only available in the glass myothin lenses. I'm sure they listed the 1.9 index fullview going that high and they had a plastic myodisc (which you posted about earlier) also in that range. Now that lens seems to be gone.

They had been listed by mistake I suppose.

If this link works it should go directly to the lenses:

http://optical4less.com/index.cgi

Alan 19 Dec 2003, 04:03

livingmanna,

What happened in your dealing with Zenni? Did you try contacting them? Did you at least get your money back?

I ordered a few pairs from them and got them all. My only complaint was that that the quality of a higher prescription I ordered was poor.

Anyway, just curious about the details. I would probably have ordered from them again, but don't want to do that if they're not filling orders.

Brille 19 Dec 2003, 02:13

I agree with you Tortoise with the excellent lens options, prices and craftsmanship, I also think that the frame selection needs to improve. I would like to see designer frames at discount or lower than high street prices, and of course the most important thing for me, small frames.

I didn't see the scale +40 to -40?

tortoise 18 Dec 2003, 16:54

I looked in to the Optical4less website again recently and was quite amazed to see that the lens selection has been extended: +40 to -40! The prices aren't at all bad and there are lots of glass and plastic materials to choose from.

Lest anyone suspect that I get some sort of kick back from mentioning this... I have to say that I was very disappointed with the frame selection. Odd colours, wild or out of date styles, and, most important for me, the one frame that I have ordered from them and that I know fits me is now out of stock.

8-(

Here is how I rate them:

Lens selection...... a fantastic 10 out of 10

Quality of workmanship...... perfect 10

Service... friendly, responsive, a bit slow perhaps, some bumps due to language and culture differences... I give them a tolerant 8

Prices..... for high Rx I have found none better.... maybe 9?

frame selection...... a dismal 3 or so.

Albert, I hope you are reading this.

Cheers

livingmanna 18 Dec 2003, 16:05

I never got my glasses that I ordered from Zenni Optical either. I filed a complaint with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center a div. of the FBI - there really is such a thing!

ScuffY 16 Dec 2003, 00:59

Oh..yeh..my post is REAL..!

<~(((O)-(O)))~>

Scuffy 16 Dec 2003, 00:54

Hi...Scuffy from Oz here...

Just got my first O4L order....

A little slower than I would have liked, 11 day's from order to delivery and transit time once the order was completed 8 days from HKG to AUS, so express delivery options would be a seller.

The glasses are superb though. They where a multifocal prescription in a small rimeless lense size, with polished edges....and they look great. And they barely needed any adjustment to fit my 'head'. The glasses Ive got would cost about 400-500 AUD here in OZ, I paid only $200AUD.

I would happily reccomend to anyone considering (providing you are confident with all your prescription info and lense shape and sizes)...

Go all you Ozzy OO's...

out

ScuffY

FourYeux 15 Dec 2003, 06:45

How does one calculate pupillary distance. My prescription is about -20.

Wendy 12 Dec 2003, 05:18

Speedo

Sorry,I haven't posted any pics but honestly, after all the bad posts about O4L on this thread, I just had to give praise when due. For me they were excellent, even though I have a straight forward, quite weak rx.

Good luck with your order.

Speedo 11 Dec 2003, 12:58

To tortoise ,

Nice pics , nice face ;)

Think I'm going to order from o4l within a few days.

speedo mac

Brille 10 Dec 2003, 02:23

Hi Tortoise, I have made a 1.8 lenticular order which is in fabrication...

tortoise 09 Dec 2003, 20:19

Brille did you get 1.8 MDs from O4L??

Speedo I have a few pics up at:

http://public.fotki.com/OOtortoise/

If anyone else would like to use this album to post pics of glasses let me know here and I will give my E-mail addy.

Brille 09 Dec 2003, 08:57

Optical4less also have a new lens option, apollo 1.67 lenticular (myodisc), I wonder how this will compare to their excellent fabrication of myodiscs in 1.8 glass.

Smudgeur 08 Dec 2003, 11:23

Just received an order from Optical4less, and like Wendy was extremely pleased with the results. I too paid very little on eBay for them.

(And I don't work for them either!)

Petey 08 Dec 2003, 07:20

I guess I should mention my experience with Optical4less as well. I ordered a pair of glasses with 1.9 index and a very strong prescription (-28ish). It took a long time to get them - over a month, apparently because Albert had a hard time getting the lens material he needed. But the glasses are extrememly well made...almost beautiful. I've ordered some glasses from zennioptical as well. I'd say zenni or 39dollarglasses.com are great for weaker prescriptions, but for very strong ones, optical4less is probably the place to go. The wait can be long, but I doubt you can beat the quality and price. (Zenni's glasses seem fine in weaker prescriptions, but a higher prescription order didn't turn out very well.)

Wendy 08 Dec 2003, 03:45

Hi

I thought I would mention that I have just received the best pair of glasses I have ever owned from Optical4less.com. I am so pleased and would recommend them to anyone, best of all they cost me next to nothing on e-bay. If you're not sure about anything, just e-mail Albert and ask him like I did. (no, I don't work for them!!!!!)

Johnnyb555 04 Dec 2003, 20:46

Hello all,

Some previous posts asked where to get high powered lenses reasonably. I got a pair of +20s earlier this year for $47.50 each from Canada, no questions asked. They even sent me an email last week asking if I needed a replacement. I think Spexman also used them a few times. www.globallens.com, email them (Leo) with any questions, as not all powers are listed.

Johnnyb555 26 Nov 2003, 12:49

PAYPAL Users BEWARE...

Ok, so continuing my saga with OPTICAL4LESS. I ordered with PAYPAL as I think that's the only option. Because O4L was not able to fulfill my order, they refunded my money, minus $7 for PAYPAL fees.

I received confirmation from PAYPAL, but guess what? PAYPAL charges ANOTHER $1.50 to refund your money via check. Paypal will not refund to the original credit card, but do have a way to avoid the $1.50 charge if you provide your checking account information for direct deposit.

Paypal already has my Credit Card info, address, phone#, etc... I'm not about to give them additional banking information.

To conclude... I LOST $8.50 TO O4L because I used Paypal and because O4L couldn't fill the order. What a sham (O4L... if you read this... PLEASE make another payment option available other than Paypal).

J.

Dotty Della 25 Nov 2003, 04:50

Thought I would defend www.optical4less.com as in my case they were excellent. Maybe they brushed up on their communication skills since the incident with Russell.

They have a bargain on e-bay at the minute. How cheap are they, there is no way I could get a pair of rx glasses in Australia for that price. My last pair cost me 7 times as much.

O4L RULES!!!!

Bethany 21 Nov 2003, 23:27

Russell

Thanks for the info. I really don't think they lose out on their e-bay orders, like I said, by the time you pay the double shipping cost and your bid, it is probably cheaper to buy from their web site. Although after reading various posts, I am rather dubious. Even their e-bay feedback rating isn't too high.

I have ordered from 39 dollar glasses before and they were very impressive. Worth paying the extra maybe.

Michael 21 Nov 2003, 22:19

Hello everyone,

I've been reading the posts for a few weeks. I just tried to order on line from Optical4less.com, but keep getting an error, that I haven't selected a lens type, although I did. Any ideas?

Johnnyb555 21 Nov 2003, 21:50

Tortoise,

I said that I'd update you on my Optical4Less order. Well, unfortunately the lenses that I ordered last month are no longer available, I ordered the 1.9 index glass, non-myodisc. O4L offered to make them myodiscs, refund the $10 difference, and add the sunglasses clip-ons. I asked for a refund, and for O4L to let me know when or if they can get the 1.9.

I paid with PayPal... did you know that Paypal will not refund the full amount? They kept about $10, calling it a transaction fee. What a ripoff. I'll let you know if O4L ever gets the 1.9... sure hope they do.

J.

GOCgirl 21 Nov 2003, 08:39

what make of contacts are you thinking of getting? With the acuvue 1-day ones (really comfortable after you've got used to them), the base curve isn't quite as important as for some others as they are so flexible. But if you want to be sure, go and get a fitting to non-prescription contacts somewhere and get them to tell you your base curve. Good luck.

GOC Newbie 21 Nov 2003, 08:32

Vision Direct only offer two options in their contact lenses for "base curve": 8.5 or 9.0.

What is Base Curve, and what would be the normal amount for contact lenses?

Thanks

Henry_c 21 Nov 2003, 08:20

Guest: Sounds like the same problem. Good to know it's not just me.

Guess they will solve it in time. Wasn't planning to order just yet anyway. There's supposed to be a button and more at the bottom.

guest 21 Nov 2003, 07:28

I'm using "netscape" and having problems,I tried "explore" too!

I even tried d/l new "browsers" and still the same problems; No submit of order at the bottom of the page and the shopping cart doesn't register.

Henry_c 21 Nov 2003, 06:58

Just wondering if any of you have the same problem. Optical4less.com's website seems to give my browser problem (IE5.5 I think). Some text and buttons are not there.

 20 Nov 2003, 08:49

I recently won a bid with O4L for slightly less than this.

The transaction seems to be going well so far and I have been impressed by Albert's handling and promptness of response.

Let's wait and see though!

BTW it was a simple single vision prescription.

Russell 20 Nov 2003, 07:38

Bethany...I would be happy to answer your question, even though it may open me up to comments like "what did he expect for that amount?" I won the bid for $20.50. This was the first ebay listing for O4L, so I think it attracted only 3 bidders because no one knew what to expect. As I said earlier, they also tacked on $15 for shipping, which is more than twice what they charge on their website. I knew at the time that I was getting a bargain for a complete pair of glasses, but I expected to get progressive lenses because no restrictions were listed and I thought the auction was a promotional deal. If it was, then it backfired for both me and Albert of O4L, because neither of us enjoyed the transaction.

GOCgirl 20 Nov 2003, 03:05

visiondirect.com is based either in USA or Canada so it should be easier for you than for us in Europe. Good luck

Bethany 20 Nov 2003, 02:45

RUSSELL

Would it be rude to ask how much the final bid was on your o4l glasses on e-bay? I have tried to bid on numerous occasions but am always outbid. I will only bid so it works out cheaper than buying them from his website, but it never is!

Thanks

royboy 19 Nov 2003, 20:35

thanx goc girl, though i am in the usa --- i'll check 'em out, regards

GOCgirl 19 Nov 2003, 01:55

Try www.visiondirect.com for online contacts. They are very efficient and quick and ship all over the world (I'm in the UK).

the nameless 16:48 post says: 18 Nov 2003, 21:42

I , too, don't think it necessary or wise to invite Albert here to answer questions. He is quite accessible and willing to answer questions that are sent to him via his own website. I think it's much better for him to answer questions specific to the person asking rather than try to address a whole community consisting of many individuals with many different needs on this site.

He is aware that many of the glasses he makes are for "collection purposes only" ( his words, not mine), so I would just let each person find their own way to him and leave it at that.

just my opinion.

royboy 18 Nov 2003, 21:05

hi folks --- i'm somewhat new to the 'goc' community [though i've been in the closet quite some time] --- was wondering if anyone can recommend with confidence an on-line contact lens source. i'm sure i've seen it mentioned here, but now am unable to locate the thread. much appreciated --- royboy

tortoise 18 Nov 2003, 19:35

Stan, yes I really don't want to initiate anything unless I feel I have a supporting consensus amongst the Eyescene community. I tend to be very straight forward and risk taking... and sometimes I blunder. That's ok if it is only me who is affected but in this case it might be many fellow OOs so I want to be careful. Complicated, isn't it, when you think about the likelyhood that Albert may read this?

Anybody else like to give an opinion?

Stan 18 Nov 2003, 18:15

tortoise, I would not stick my nose in if you didn't specifically ask for opinions.

I don't think it's a good idea. I don't know exactly why. If he finds his own way here and wants to hang around, maybe participate, either anonymously or otherwise, then it is all his decision and so be it. But if we invite him in, somehow I feel it might expose him to some liability somewhere down the road or something. Like I said, I don't know exactly why. To me it is kind of like on Star Trek where if they go back in time, they are not allowed to do anything that would alter the events that naturally transpired lest something bad might happen.

I do agree that it would be great to cultivate that relationship, I just don't think we should initiate. I sure wish we would also cultivate one with a laser surgeon! One of those could make a few bucks from our membership.

tortoise 17 Nov 2003, 18:20

Even more wonderful Anna, don't be sorry in the least! It's great to hear that you might like to post pics. If I can help at all you could post them to my fotki page. Let me know and I will give you my e-mail addy.

Hope you get your camera back soon. 8-)

tortoise 17 Nov 2003, 18:14

Yeah, I have to agree with the nameless post of 16:48. That was not Albert. Russell, I am not commenting at all about the rights and wrongs of your experience with optical4less but I really think that a lot of people are finding the service pretty acceptable and I think that an online supplier of inexpensive high Rx glasses is valuable to this community and we would do well to cultivate it.

I wonder what people here think about inviting Albert to post to Eyescene as himself to answer questions and perhaps to express some of the realities of the business. Personally, I would like to be sure that he knows about GOC and is ok with orders for that purpose.

Would this not be a good idea? I don't want to do it on my own if others here feel that it would somehow ruin things....???

Jamie 17 Nov 2003, 17:52

I'll second that, Russell. Shit happens, get over it.

 17 Nov 2003, 16:48

I have had extensive email correspondence with Albert and his command of the English language is not anywhere near the level of of Visitor's post- That post was definitely not written by Albert!

I have been very pleased with the service, the communication, and the workmanship of Opti4Less glasses.

If you really were upset when he told you that the ebay auction you won didn't include progressives, you could have opted out of the auction at that point and saved yourself a lot of grief.

Russell 17 Nov 2003, 13:59

Oh! I forgot...if "visitor" isn't Albert himself, I would be quite surprised.

Russell 17 Nov 2003, 13:58

Visitor...it makes me look like a consumer who had every reason to expect what was offered. I'm sure a survey of ebay sellers would reveal that many did not get the winning bid that they expected, yet they lived up to their listing and sold anyway. And now, can we quit beating this dead horse?

GwGs 17 Nov 2003, 04:36

Hmmmm, i wonder who "Visitor" is.

No Albert by any chance...no can't be!! :)

tortoise 16 Nov 2003, 21:01

JohnnyB555, I think you should be patient. My experience with them is much like Anna's.... 2 separate orders, both high rx, both took about a month. The results were well worth waiting for. My guess is that they may be a relatively small outlet currently struggling to keep up with a large influx of orders.

Anna, are you the wonderful Anna of the frauenmittbrille photos?

Visitor 16 Nov 2003, 13:37

Russell

The error this Albert made seems to have been out of ignorance, and that can be forgiven, can't it?

If a cashier gave me too much money as change, and then caught it before I left the counter, would it be proper to say, "Wait, you already put it in my hand, I'm not giving it back."?

If this incident makes Albert appear to be a bit light in the gray matter department, how does it make you look?

Johnnyb555 16 Nov 2003, 08:21

Hey guys

I also ordered from O4L. Ordered on 10/20, Albert sent me email (to my Yahoo account) with a question the next day, but Yahoo delivered it to the Bulk email folder. I found the msg on 11/9, replied, and on 11/11 Albert confirmed, saying it will e ready in 1 to 2 business days. It's been five days, status of glasses is "still being crafted". Oh well. To their credit, it is a very strong prescription. I asked for a contact telephone number five days ago, never heard back.

I wonder if they'll hold shipment to spite me as well... hehe... I hope not. If all goes well, I'm sure I'll order many more. I'll keep you posted.

Yoni 16 Nov 2003, 08:06

John77 -- I ordered from the O4L site, over two weeks ago and still no glasses.

Russell -- If I were you, I'd notify Albert (I doubt it's his real name), then call my credid card company to see if they can reverse charges.

My take on this: O4L doesn't have sufficient stock, as was evident by their web site (every other frame was out of stock).

Just looked at the site again... they really, really screwed it up. Try clicking on TESTIMONIALS, then back to GLASSES or SUNGLASSES... let me know if it works. Doesn't for me.

Russell 16 Nov 2003, 07:29

Having read posts here about O4L and also reading the feedback on ebay, I am convinced that my order was held up on purpose just to spite me. I honestly bid on the glasses thinking that I would get progressive lenses since the listing did not have any lens restrictions. Albert of O4L, however, made it abundantly clear that I could not expect him to honor the listing in such a way. Would it have hurt his business to take a loss on one pair of glasses in order to gain my goodwill and keep me from posting negatively about him and his business? Obviously, he didn't think so. I will never ever order from them again. I am glad, however, that the rest of you are being treated well. And, I must admit, Albert learned from the experience...his newer listings now say single vision only.

Russell 14 Nov 2003, 04:53

yoni...the shipping alone took 18 days. They took ten days to make the glasses. There were an additional four days of arguing through email with Albert before we agreed on what he would make for me. In all, that's a total of 32 days from winning (maybe a better term would be "losing") the ebay auction to receiving the glasses, which, I forgot to say earlier, were a different shape lens from what I ordered! Once again, I want to warn anyone who is considering ordering from them about these problems.

welshlad_21 14 Nov 2003, 03:05

www.39dollarglasses.com allow you to see the virtual try on, unfortunately not with your own picture though.

yoni039 13 Nov 2003, 22:45

Russel,

About how long did it take to receive the glasses from Optical4Less? I ordered mine almost two weeks ago.

Y.

Aislinn 13 Nov 2003, 10:47

Does anyone know of any online retailers or just websites that allows you to do a "virual try on" apart from www.eyeglasses.com????

Russell 13 Nov 2003, 10:41

I received my glasses from Optical4Less, purchased through ebay (see previous posts for my saga with Albert of O4L.) Since he refused to give me what I wanted, even though his listing wasn't specific about single vision lenses only, I asked for single vision reading glasses. The glasses I received are no better than over the counter readers that I could have bought for less than half of what I paid him. Plus, he charged me $15 for the shipping, while he charges website users only $7. I would not recommend O4L at all! A funny note...he apparently, being Asian, did not recognize my name as one of a male. He sent the glasses in a lavender case with a pink cleaning cloth, addressed to Miss Russell Last name (I'm witholding my last name on purpose, here, folks.)

welshlad_21 12 Nov 2003, 03:59

I have ordered contacts from www.visiondirect.com and I must say they are very very helpful, they have kept me informed every step of the way. I have been informed that my lenses were shipped yesterday. I will keep you updated on how long it took to receive them here in UK!

Petra 10 Nov 2003, 04:11

David

My glasses from 39dollarglasses came in a cardboard pouch and I think it did have their name on it. Keep watching for the post, they are really fast, expect your glasses within a week.

Brian-16 10 Nov 2003, 01:58

david-From what I hear it may be a USPS priority package. Some on-line outfits use UPS.Was wondering if you now wear glasses or this is your first pair and just experimenting.Well in any case good luck and let us know how you make out. What rx did you order?

david 09 Nov 2003, 16:58

what sort of packaging do the glasses arrive in from 39dollarglasses.com? has the envelope got any markings on saying that they are from that website or is it just a plain envelope? i am just wondering because if i bought some from there and then my parents were to see the package they might wonder why i am buying glasses from the internet.

thanks

Leon 09 Nov 2003, 07:14

<i>www.myeyeglasses.net is another source of rimless glasses. I have no experience of them. </i>

I do, they're very good and fast, and their customer service is excellent. Only 'bad thing' is that they only use polycarb and hi index lenses, no common CR39.

bLANCHE 09 Nov 2003, 04:49

Yes, Zenni Optical said that they hope to post to Australia within 3 weeks of my asking, 8 Weeks later I am still waiting. After reading the previous posts I don't think I will waste my hard earned cash on them.

I must say that 39dollarglasses.com are really good. They sent my prescription glasses out to Australia within a week of ordering - no questions asked. I recommend you use them.

Henry_c 04 Nov 2003, 10:30

Regarding Optical4Less: I asked them a few questions regarding their rimless frames and how to request special.

They sent a detailed email with all the info I needed. If I order I will let you know my opinions about them.

www.myeyeglasses.net is another source of rimless glasses. I have no experience of them.

New to post 04 Nov 2003, 08:21

I am new here but I have contact ZenniOptical about shipping to here, in UK, 1st they tell me that it would be a few weeks before they put the information on their website, 8 weeks later I ask them again and they ignore my email... Anyone else had any problems with them. I really want to order from them.

mviii 03 Nov 2003, 21:31

Specs4less is great!

Just received a pair of progressives from them, and the fit is marvelous. I provided them with frames, and they made up the lenses. I gave them specific instructions about the vertical placement, and they placed the lenses in the frame exactly where they belonged.

Customer service is very responsive, and concerned. Michelle, is wonderful.

Price is very competative.

Five Star rating, in my opinion.

tortoise 03 Nov 2003, 18:51

Russel, I'm sorry to hear that Albert and Optical4less did not give you the good treatment that you had every right to expect. They have just come through for me bigtime! Today I received my second pair of -24 myodisc glasses from them and I find them to be exquisitely made. The bowls are only 20mm and the fronts are a tiny bit concave. This results in glasses that very few people would spot as strong Rx. They are incredibly thin and light. I think the order took about a month and that seems to be a long wait but, in my experience, this can happen when high Rx glasses are ordered through your local optometrist as well.

Albert's English language and general communication skills may be a bit rough but I have found him happy to supply what I ask for and only concerned to avoid problems and disappointments. The key for me has been to be clear about exactly what I want and to calmly insist on just that.

I think whoever is making the high Rx glasses is a real expert.

I will post a few pics tomorrow.

Russell 03 Nov 2003, 09:59

Glad to hear that you all are getting good service from O4L. I still haven't received my glasses, so I can't say whether I will be satisfied or not. I do know that I was not impressed with Albert, as he used such phrases as "Negative feedback is not an important thing for a 0 feedback new account . If you wanna write some negative , go ahead . I dont care." Most ebay sellers do care about negative feedback. That reply suggested to me that Albert did not care about customer satisfaction. That being said, I am glad to hear that he has been good to you guys. I assure you, his emails to me were not a "joke." He was deadly serious when he refused to honor his ad on ebay and suggested that I should not even be expecting him to do so. I did see, however, that his current ebay listing says "single vision only," so I guess I made an impact.

Russell 30 Oct 2003, 15:24

More on Optical4less...I won the ebay auction of theirs for a complete pair of glasses. I sent my prescription, asking for progressive lenses. The ebay description of the item I bid on did not say "single vision only." Albert--the O4L administrator--adamantly refused to give me anything but single vision at the price I paid. I knew I paid very little, but I also know that sometimes the winning bid on ebay often is less than the seller wanted. After several emails back and forth, Albert agreed to make me single vision reading glasses. Their tracking screen said "making in progress...3-6 days." Eleven days later, the tracking screen finally said the glasses were completed and shipped. I will update you when I receive them. My point in all this is to warn you all that Albert is intractable--there is no arguing with him. I don't think I would order from him again, but perhaps my mind will be changed when I see the glasses.

SZ6 30 Oct 2003, 14:34

It looks like they have increased the range of prescriptions they offer since the last time I ordered from them. Too bad the very high prescription lenses are so expensive.

alan 30 Oct 2003, 14:18

Zenni does offer higher than -12. I ordered a pair of -16 but haven't got them yet.

I did get some -6, though, and quality seems just fine.

They ship from California...are they actually in China?

SZ6 30 Oct 2003, 12:57

I've ordered one pair of glasses from them so far and have no complaints.

SZ6 30 Oct 2003, 11:39

I wish Zenni Optical offered higher than -12, and had larger frames available. Their glasses are cheap and high quality.

Yoni039 30 Oct 2003, 06:51

States,

How long did it take you to receive the glasses from OPTICAL4LESS ? I placed an order almost two weeks ago, they acknowledged receipt immediately, but haven't heard from them since. I'm in the US.

States 30 Oct 2003, 06:05

Be extremely careful with optical4less.I just placed an order for an rx with a reading add, which was acknowledged properly. However, they shipped single vision lenses and have refused to admit any error, making outrageous statements such as "spherical add for reading is not the same as bifocal"

 27 Oct 2003, 08:29

i've been looking at other online retailers.

these contacts are designed for children, but other suppliers offer them from +20 to +32 increasing in whole numbers.

These are SILSOFT SUPER PLUS APHAKIC lenses

and other retailers offer them for less cash too.

lentifan 27 Oct 2003, 06:04

Specs4ever.

Why would they market a range for children, and not an equivalent range for adults, which would seem a much bigger market. I am sure I am missing something.

specs4ever 27 Oct 2003, 04:36

Won't do a lot of us much good though, as the max bc is 8.3, and the largest dia is 12.5. I need 9.0 and 15.0, and I suspect that these lenses are only for children

specs4ever 27 Oct 2003, 04:33

I find that with the higher powers, the glasses prescription can be fine tuned by sliding the specs up or down the nose slightly. The focal point of a pair of -45D glasses is something like 3/4" or somewhere around there. I have all the numbers, but they are stashed away for a while. If you figure it out though, you will find that a very slight mvement of a pair of high powered minus specs will make the vision quite clear.

lentifan 27 Oct 2003, 03:53

As these contact lenses are only available in steps of +3 dioptres at the high end, would a regular user have to wear glasses anyway to fine tune the prescription to the last dioptre or so?

 27 Oct 2003, 02:23

www.visionexpress.com

now sells contacts with strengths +19, +20, +23, +26, +29 and +32

Allen 22 Oct 2003, 16:47

Went to the http://optical4less.com/ but don't see how I can order. Don't see an option for add to cart or check out? Maybe I really need glasses to see. Tried Netscape and MSIE. Any ideas?

D-W-V 21 Oct 2003, 22:16

Don't worry about the Doctor's name and number. Just make up a plausible name and phone number, and make sure your prescription doesn't have any errors in it. If they do try to contact him and fail, they'll call you, and you can say that the Doctor retired or moved away.

Yoni039 19 Oct 2003, 09:29

Hi D-W-V,

Yup, they do have nicer frames than Optical4Less. Thanks for the links, but both sites ask for Dr's name and phone# as a requirement... and only go to -12. Oh well.

Y.

D-W-V 18 Oct 2003, 18:07

I did a yahoo search on glasses, and found http://www.specs4less.com and http://www.glasses4less.com

Specs4less is cheap (starting at $35 frame and lenses), has frames you'd actually want to wear in public (not just to satisfy some depraved fetish), and a decent web site.

Yoni039 18 Oct 2003, 08:05

This post about OPTICAL4LESS should really go here, not in "seen on the web"... sorry.

Brille,

By calling Optical4less a "closeout store" I was referring to stores which buy closeout merchandise at a bargain, probably not from a manufacturer / distributor. So... they may not be able to get the same frames again.

You are right though, they should update their site. They've been out of half of their frames for perhaps three weeks? I'm begining to wonder it the store pictures are even real...

Yoni.

D-W-V 16 Oct 2003, 21:44

About the NHS frames: try searching the UK version of Ebay. Calling every optical shop in the UK might work too: there's bound to be one that still has some old stock frames.

JJ 13 Oct 2003, 22:16

I think acuvue2 lenses are very comfortable. 8.3 is what I wear and believe it is considered "median"

ContactGirl 13 Oct 2003, 18:18

Joe, I went to lensmart.com -- i ordered freshlook colors and they ask me for my doctors details when I try to pay for it. I know all the details of my current contacts, but want to get .50 stronger :)

Newbie 09 Oct 2003, 07:24

I am wearing Freshlook - they are ok, but not comfortable for up to 3 hours after putting them on. All the hype on Acuvue2 makes me want to try them, lol. All I do for a color change! I do have a friend that wears them with a prescription clear lenses and he said he loves them. Thanks!

Alan 09 Oct 2003, 06:06

Newbie - I'm not an expert, but I think it could cause the lenses not to fit well, which may mean they move a lot on your eye or don't move enough. I think moving a lot would make them uncomfortable; I think not moving enough can promote eye infections and other oxygen deficit problems.

But if you get them, you can probably tell if they fit. Why do you want to try acuvue 2?

Newbie 08 Oct 2003, 18:36

Hello All; I have a question about Contacts that maybe you can answer. I Currenly wear Freshlook Contacts. However, I want to try Acuvue 2 contacts -- The Base Curve on my prescribed lenses is MEDIAN w/ a Diameter of 14.5 However the Acuvue comes in a base curve of 8.3 w/ a 14.0 Diameter. Is this going to cause any problems? I want to order online because of the cheaper price. I wear plano contacts for color b/c I wear glasses. I like having blue eyes ;-)

Tanya 08 Oct 2003, 11:21

Maxine

I know all about the frames you're looking for, they were the first glasses I ever put on when I tried on a classmate's glasses about 40 years ago and yes, they were pink. The girl and I became close friends and still are. An older guy at school wore the same style but in the dark brown colour. I think the frame style is called "windsor" I seem to recall looking at a John Lennon site and his glasses were called windsor style try typing in a search for windsor style glasses and see how you get on. The Ironic thing is, they will probably cost a fortune these days, in the 1960s you couldn't give them away!

Tanya

Maxine 08 Oct 2003, 08:54

Letifan

Yeah you're right about the frames of the early 90s being of a similar shape as the old NHS style,I even saw a guy wearing a brown pair complete with the wire earpieces and, yes the hinges were bright metal too. I want the glasses for theatrical purposes but I will have them fitted with my own RX

Maxine

lentifan 08 Oct 2003, 03:41

Something very similar to the original NHS wire frames came back into fashion, at least in Britain, for a while in the nineties. These were black and started in the near-round lens shape I remember from the old NHS days. Many people wore them who did not suit them and looked almost as silly as the large brightly coloured plastic frames of a decade or so earlier.

Pretty soon different lens shapes started to appear and the original NHS look was superceded. Maybe today's black metal ovals and rectangles are the natural development of this style. However, as I remember them, the NHS style always had the hinges in bright steel, never in colour.

Casting back to the NHS days, I remember the dark brown (which I always thought was black) and the pink (which was presumably intended for little girls). In my memory, little girls (and the Milky Bar Kid)sometimes wore white frames for a few years before changing to black or plastic. Pink was not common and I don't recall seeing any blue.

Then sophiticated plastic came in, and that's another story.

Brille 08 Oct 2003, 01:35

Maxine,

I have been trying in vain to find British NHS glasses, I thought www.retrospecs.co.uk and framefinder.co.uk would help but it seems not. Nevertheless I still think they exist somewhere as a retro style. For a pair second hand you can try the charity shops in England. I would love a pair brand new in crystal and if anyone has information let me know. Anyway good luck Maxine.

Maxine 07 Oct 2003, 15:16

I am trying to get hold of the very old style of british NHS metal frames, they game in pink, blue or a dark brown colour, and had springy wire earpieces. They were hated by a generation of British school kids, but were also made in adult sizes. does anyone know if there is an online retailer (or anywhere) who sells these frames. I would be grateful for any assistance.

Brille 06 Oct 2003, 07:48

I know there are a lot of posts regarding www.optical4less.com on the GOC thread but this one is appropriately called online retailers. I noticed today that there are a lot of frames out of stock so they must have received many online orders. I hope their selection improves, as with other on line services it is always difficult to find very small frames which would be more attractive for a strong Rx.

Hayes 04 Oct 2003, 22:17

-23 Sorry, fuzziness of memory too--that's Coastalcontacts.com

joe 29 Sep 2003, 11:20

try www.lensmart.com

I have +19 contacts and they have never asked me for my doctor's details, and there service is good.

I am visually impaired (i think that with +19 contacts that is obvious) so to be able to order on the internet is essential for me.

-23 29 Sep 2003, 11:06

hayes

that adress doesnt work!!!!!!

Hayes 29 Sep 2003, 10:32

Brian--Try Coastcontacts.com -- they filled my order with no folderol after vision direct started requiring and verifying scrips -- Decent prices, quick service-

Brian 18 Aug 2003, 20:40

Does anyone know of a website where you could purchase contact lenses over the internet without a prescription? I have always gone to Vision Direct in the past, but I got a postcard in the mail today saying they will require a doctors name and phone # with every order starting on September 1st. Thanks..

Leon 07 Aug 2003, 23:55

Some of you may be interested in this. As I posted in the 'Lenses' topic some time ago my wife ordered some nice rimless semi-wraparound style sunglasses on the Internet.

I got a newsletter from this retailer the other day stating that more of their wraparound sunglasses are Rx'able now. I just looked up their web site and noticed that they offer quite a nice selection now (including Adidas, Oakley and Silhouette). If you're interested, check out http://www.apairofshades.com

UKLadd 06 Jul 2003, 20:29

I ordered from 39dollarglasses.com and I didn't enter any telephone number for my eye Dr and my order still came through :)

Stan 11 May 2003, 11:57

That was my plan, too. Thanks for the information, Napi.

Napi 11 May 2003, 08:44

Stan - I ordered from 39dollarglasses, with a stronger prescription than my own of course!, and gave a fake doctor's telelphone # so they couldn't have checked even if they'd tried. Didn't stop the order arriving in the post though, I have to guess that the order is more important than the accuracy of the prescription. Don't worry. I figured even if they did try I could say oops my mistake and cancel ...

Stan 11 May 2003, 07:21

39dollarglasses asks for eye doctor name and phone. Anybody know whether they attempt contact with doctor?

Leon 14 Mar 2003, 03:18

Personally, I think theyedoctor.com and framesdirect.com are quite good (and fast).

I'd certainly recommend them. Theyedoctor.com in particular, as I was very pleased with the way they handled my order.

Dr.S. 10 Mar 2003, 05:13

There are some fairly recent additions to the US online retailers. One is eyeglassesinternational.com, Pompano Beach, FL. A while a go they quoted me $75 for a pair of -16.5 lenses in CR39. This website has a look and feel rather similar to eyeglass factory outlet, and offers a very similar range of inexpensive frames. Also there is eyewearoutlet.com, Livonia, MI. The latter place told me last week by email reply to my enquiry that they could do any prescription in CR39 no matter how strong, for $85 for a pair of lenses. They said -17 would be no problem. They will install new lenses in your frame if you mail it in. Does anybody have any experience with either of these retailers? Also note there is a business in Syracuse, NY called Eyeglass Lens Replacement or 8004eyeglasses.com that looked quite useful, however they told me they will not do anything above about -10.

Libby 07 Mar 2003, 05:06

I'd like to thank those who sent private messages to my email box on this issue... Though Benn, I'd still like to hear about your experience.

Thanks again everyone.

Libby

Wurm 04 Mar 2003, 13:32

benn,

I'm not doubting your word, but a statement like that obliges you to produce some facts to back it up.

Libby 04 Mar 2003, 11:48

benn,

my email address is libby2556@Yahoo.com

libby 04 Mar 2003, 11:38

yikes. would you mind communicating with me via email abt this?

Libby 04 Mar 2003, 11:10

I live in the US ordered a pair of glasses from an overseas online retailer. The price was abt half of what I would have paid here at a local optical shop.

It's been nearly a month..and no glasses. IS such a delay reasonable? I'm beginning to think I've been had!

Alan 27 Feb 2003, 15:46

www.39dollarglasses.com

I've ordered a few pairs from them, and am very happy with the style of the frames, their delivery time, the lenses and mounting. One thing that has been a minor annoyance is that I got two different versions of the same frame and found that they fit very differently, as they were bent in different ways. I think I can take care of this with a hairdryer and some work, but they have shown impressive (and annoying) resiliance going back to the shape I got them in.

Good place, though, it seems (but all their lenses are polycarb or high index)

Visitboy 27 Feb 2003, 12:55

I've ordered from ruok4specs. As d-w-v said, the frames weren't quite straight, and the lens edges weren't as well finished as by my optician. But all in all, fairly good.

d-w-v 13 Jul 2002, 14:44

I ordered glasses from RU0K4SPECs. The quality was OK, but the frames weren't shaped properly. If you set the glasses on the table (unfolded), only one of the temples touches the table top. They were shipped in a rigid plastic case, inside an ordinary envelope.

Fuzzy 09 Jul 2002, 02:48

Here it's possible to order lenses between -6 and +6 dpt. http://www.seeside.de You also can send in your frame and they will put in the lenses.

At this adress it's possible to choose frames directly and order them with lenses.

http://www.brillenplanet.de/

At both websites you do not need to send in a prescripton.

Smudgeur 26 Jun 2002, 14:43

Has anyone in the UK used either:

www.ruok4specs.co.uk

or

www.economeyes.co.uk

both seem very reasonably priced and I'm thinking of trying them out.

Thoughts anyone?

regards

Smudgeur

Trent 16 Jun 2002, 15:12

Here are three retailers (same company) for contact lenses.

www.VisionDirect.com

www.1StopContacts.com

www.Lensmart.com

Wurm 14 Jun 2002, 20:39

Eyeglass Factory Outlet, at http://eyeglassfactoryoutlet.com/ has just released a new catalog of frames. I think they do a pretty good job of presenting a variety of budget frames resembling a real fashion selection. I ordered from them once and was happy with the results.
